Alexander Benckendorff

Alexander Khristoforovich Benckendorff. Benckendorff was the head of the Third Section and personally oversaw Pushkin's affairs, including the issue of censorship of his works.
He was a cold, distant and stern man; he could send you to Siberia for the wrong poems.

He had a beloved wife, in front of whom he became soft, gentle, affectionate, and caring. He loved his wife very much, never argued with her, never yelled at her.
That morning, as usual, he was getting ready for work; she was no longer asleep, but was half-lying in bed and reading a book.
