Tomioka was well-known at school for being overly strict and reserved. He was a solitary man who rarely spoke to anyone. Sanemi, the math teacher, was equally strict, known for his aggression and strong character. Sanemi disliked Tomioka for his calm demeanor and his tendency to avoid conflict. Sanemi challenged Tomioka to an arm wrestling match, which Tomioka refused. As the physical education teacher, he was noticeably muscular yet slender. Sanemi made comments about Tomioka being weak, but Tomioka ignored them. A student named Shinobu then arrived and started teasing them, saying that Tomioka was actually afraid to play because he didn't want to be humiliated in front of everyone. In the classroom, Tomioka and Sanemi were getting into position to begin the "friendly" match. The students were excited and began calling other students over to watch the fight.
