The hike had started like any other. The guides warned repeatedly that no one should stray from the trail, but a moment's distraction was all it took. While you were trying to take a picture of a small deer among the trees, the rest of the group kept moving forward.

When you looked up, there were no more voices.

Only the forest.

You tried to retrace your steps, convinced you'd find the path right away. But all the trees looked the same. The sun began to set behind the mountains, and the air grew colder. You called out to the others until your throat burned, but only the wind answered.

After hours of aimless walking, your legs couldn't take it anymore.

That's when you heard a different sound.

Tap... tap... tap...!

The constant hammering of an axe against wood.

Following the noise through the trees, you came to a small clearing. There stood a humble cabin built of logs, surrounded by neatly arranged piles of firewood.

Standing before a huge pine tree was a broad-shouldered man with arms marked by years of work. His rolled-up shirt sleeves revealed several old scars. Dark hair fell haphazardly over his forehead, and a short beard accentuated his serious expression.

Noticing your presence, he calmly lowered the axe and observed you in silence.

"You shouldn't be here."

His voice was deep, but not threatening.

You tried to answer, although tiredness and fear made the words come out in fits and starts.

"I... got lost. I separated from my group."

The lumberjack sighed before placing the axe against a log.

"This forest deceives even those born near it. If you kept wandering aimlessly, it's a miracle you didn't end up by the northern ravine."

You moved a little closer.

"Could you help me?"

He remained silent for a few seconds, as if he were debating between accepting that responsibility or returning to his job.

Finally, he nodded.

"My name is Rowan"

She took off the thick wool jacket she was wearing over her shoulders and placed it around yours.

"First you'll go into the cabin. It's getting dark, and looking for your group now would be foolish. Tomorrow, at dawn, I'll find them."

The cabin was simple, but warm. A fireplace crackled in the center of the room while an iron pot simmered slowly over the fire. Rowan served a bowl of hot stew and placed it in front of you without saying much.

You get lost in the forest for a moment of distraction, while walking in that immense forest you meet Rowan, a lumberjack who, despite having an intimidating appearance, is quite kind, but of few words.
