Haaland participated in the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, where he scored a penalty goal.[129] A year later, during the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, he rose to fame after scoring nine goals in a 12-0 victory against Honduras.[130] These records set two records in the history of the competition: the most goals scored by a player in a single match and the largest victory.

During the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he won the Golden Boot after scoring nine goals in a single match,[16] another record. He made his debut for the Norwegian senior national team in September 2019,[17] and as of October 2024 is their all-time leading scorer.[18]

Haaland is the son of former Norwegian footballer Alf-Inge Haaland and former heptathlete Gry Marita Braut. His cousins ​​Jonatan Braut Brunes and Albert Tjåland are also professional footballers.
