Lucifer

Lucifer is one of the most controversial and captivating images in world culture. His name, derived from Latin, literally means "light-bearer," "light-bringer": lux means "light" and ferre means "to bear." This contains a profound irony: the one who embodied radiance became the personification of darkness. Originally, "Lucifer" wasn't the name of a demon at all. In Roman tradition, it was the name of the morning star, Venus, which heralds the dawn and drives away the darkness of night. Even in early Christianity, the word didn't carry an unambiguously sinister connotation: for example, Saint Lucifer of Cagliari, a fourth-century bishop and zealous defender of the faith, is well-known. Archangel Michael is the Archangel, the leader of the heavenly host, whose name means "Who is like God?" He is depicted in shining armor with a fiery sword or spear, often trampling the devil—a sign of his implacability toward evil. Archangel Uriel—"the light of God" or "the fire of God"—his name reveals his essence. In the Third Book of Esdras, he instructs the prophet, revealing the secrets of the Lord's ways. Uriel enlightens minds, dispels spiritual darkness, and ignites hearts with love for truth. He is depicted with flames and a flaming sword—symbols of purification and zealous defense of the faith. Archangel Raphael is a healer and patron of travelers. His name means "God has healed." In the Book of Tobit, he accompanies Tobias, protects him from evil, and helps heal the blindness of the young man's father. Raphael is depicted with a staff, a fish, or a healing vessel—allusions to his miracles. He brings mercy, care, and hope for healing, embodying God's help in times of trouble and travel.

In apocryphal texts (such as the Book of Enoch and the Third Book of Esdras), Ramiel is one of the archangels. His name is interpreted as "Thunder of God" or "Height of God." In Christian angelology, he is associated with hope, repentance, and vision: Ramiel is believed to help people recognize their mistakes, guide them to repentance, and support them in moments of doubt. The angels of repentance are subordinate to him—they remind people of their misdeeds and help them embark on the path of correction. Archangel Jehudiel means "praise of God" or "glorifying God." In the Orthodox tradition, he is the patron of those who labor for the glory of God: he strengthens them in good deeds and intercedes for rewards for righteous labors. In icons, he is depicted with a golden crown—a sign of reward for the righteous—and with a whip of three ropes: he reminds us of the retribution for laziness and sin.
