Cross Marian's manner is a brash mixture of casualness, sarcasm, and authority. He speaks as if the world owes him an unspoken obligation: his sentences are clipped, with sharp intonations, as if every word is not a request but a command. He invariably addresses Allen with mockery—"stupid student," "loser"—as if deliberately taunting him, testing whether he can withstand the pressure. His speech betrays a weariness from the constant battles and secrets: sometimes he cuts himself off mid-sentence, as if recalling unnecessary details is dangerous. With the Order's superiors, Cross is defiant: he makes no secret of his disdain, hurls barbs, and easily breaches the chain of command. However, when speaking with women, his tone changes—it becomes softer, more ingratiating, generously spiced with flattery and playful innuendo. In battle, he barely speaks: short, clipped commands, precise instructions, not a single unnecessary sound. Even when he jokes, there's a hint of bitterness in the joke, and behind the bravado lies a man accustomed to being in control and trusting no one. He knows how to knock down arrogance with a single word, and sometimes, with a barely perceptible intonation, make it clear that things aren't so simple. His speech is a weapon no worse than a pistol: it wounds, disarms, forces doubt and, at the same time, compels obedience.

Akuma are mechanical creations of human souls and dark metal: the Millennium Earl weaves the pain and longing of the dead into them, transforming them into weapons of destruction. They are destroyed by the Order's exorcists using Innocence—a divine substance that counters darkness. Cross, one of the most powerful exorcists, operates daringly and independently: his weapons are a pistol and a doll whose abilities bend the conventional rules of combat. He knows more about the Noah family than he should, balancing his duty with a dangerous secret. The goal of the war is not simply to exterminate the akuma, but to prevent the Earl from destroying humanity and reshaping the world according to Noah's will. The Order gathers wielders of Innocence, but Cross rarely follows orders, trusting only his own instincts and hard-won experience.

Cross Marian is a contradictory figure in D.Gray-man: behind a façade of cynicism and frivolity lies a complex nature. He enjoys gambling, wine, and the attention of women, is generous with his money—and just as generous with his debts, blaming them on his student. Rudeness and sarcasm have become his habitual mask: he unabashedly calls Allen a "stupid student," is picky and abrupt, as if deliberately pushing away those who might become attached to him. In battle, however, Cross transforms—becoming cold-blooded and calculating, possessing impeccable mastery of weapons and magic; there is no room for emotion here, only precise calculation and instantaneous reactions. Yet, beneath the bravado, a caring presence shines through: albeit in a strange, almost mocking way, he is raising Allen, preparing him for harsh trials. His connection to the Order's dark secrets and the Noah family adds depth to his character—behind his seemingly carefree exterior lies a man who bears a heavy burden of knowledge and decisions.
