His surname, Itoshi (糸いと師し, Itoshi?), means "master of threads", referring to his football experience.
Therefore, his name can be interpreted as "master of the cold thread" or "master of the worthy thread".

Puppet-Controlled Football: Rin's primary playing style involves controlling and manipulating his opponent's thoughts. After identifying each player's strengths and weaknesses on the field, Rin uses his superior technique, tactical ability, and physical prowess to manipulate them into scenarios that will result in a goal. He can do this by using his own skills against the opponent or by combining his strengths with those of his team. This style of football pushes his team's abilities to the limit and beyond, resulting in highly complex and effective passing sequences of play that often end in a goal.
Feints: By positioning herself within range of her shot, Rin manipulates her opponent into believing she will fire. This lures the opponent into attempting a block, before she feints to avoid it. Rin can also use this in reverse. By changing her form and concealing her movement, she tricks her opponent into believing she won't fire before she actually does.
Marseille Roulette: After manipulating his opponent into believing he will perform a normal feint, Rin moves on to a roulette to overcome his defense.
Elastic Nutmeg: Rin strikes the ball sideways with the outside of his foot to force a challenge from his opponent, before using the inside of his foot to push the ball between their legs and past them. He used this to get past Sendou.
Current: Current, as described by Ego, is the state of "total immersion" or "being in the zone." It's the mental state in which a person performing an activity is completely immersed in a feeling of energized concentration, total engagement, and enjoyment of the process. Rin finally reached current in the final minutes of the match against the Japanese Under-20 National Team. Rin's style of football generally revolves around precisely gauging the players' strengths on the field and drawing them out to use them, manipulating the field to achieve the best scoring opportunity.

Spatial Awareness: Rin analyzes the entire field, including his own positions, those of his teammates, and his opponents, to determine the best play. Rin's tactical ability and spatial awareness are at such a level that only Isagi can understand, counter, and rival his analytical ability. Rin is routinely able to predict the positioning and movements of other players, including Isagi, setting traps and lures to lure them into unfavorable positions, intercepting their plays, and setting up his own.
Spacing: By reading her opponent's weapon, as well as the positions of other players on the field, Rin spaces herself in such a way that allows her to predict and respond to whatever they decide to do.
Timing: Rin can also use his spatial awareness defensively; by reading and understanding the essence of his opponent's football, he can overlap his thoughts with theirs to predict what they will do next. Rin uses these moves to position himself in an opponent's blind spot, as well as to maneuver into scoring positions. He does this after determining the field of vision of players on the field, similar to Isagi.
Positioning: Rin has incredible positioning, constantly moving into areas where he can receive the ball in space and still score a goal. If Rin realizes he won't receive a pass, he always positions himself in a spot where he could score if he received the ball by chance. He demonstrated this positioning during the Second Selection, as well as during the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team.

Playmaker: A player who controls the flow of the team's offensive play and is often involved in passing moves that lead to goals, through their vision, technique, ball control, creativity, and passing ability. When younger, Rin was an instinctive player, but his brother's coaching and guidance caused him to develop a remarkably logical and predictive playing style. Whether on offense or defense, Rin's playing style consists of picking up on the skills of both his teammates and opponents and forcing their best plays and skills, manipulating them in his efforts to score goals for himself.

As a child, Rin was very innocent and in awe of his brother, Sae, and wanted nothing more than to become a great, strong player like him. He started playing soccer because his brother told him to, following his orders without question. While they played soccer together, Rin would listen to what Sae said and adjust accordingly. When Sae left for Spain, Rin found soccer to be harder without his brother, but he strove to be like him and replace him. This is where the essence of Rin's playing style would begin to change from his instinctive style to a more logical one.

Initially, he was a good team player and captain of his high school team, and seemed to get along well with some of his classmates. However, due to his fallout with his brother, he has become cold, direct, and overly serious. He is entirely focused on football, to an almost obsessive degree, and is also very selfish, always putting his goals before others and their motivations. Rin has a lot of pride as a striker, bordering on arrogance, as he frequently describes football and other people's way of thinking as "lukewarm" or "mediocre." These mannerisms and behaviors originated from his brother. In an attempt to be like his brother, Rin copies his words and embodies his way of thinking.

Rin is a tall teenage boy with a slim and strong build, being noticeably taller than Yoichi Isagi, who is older than him. He has medium-length dark hair with bangs crossing his face from left to right, slender blue-green eyes, and distinctive eyelashes that he shares with his brother Sae Itoshi. As a child, Rin looks virtually the same, his facial features only becoming more defined as he grows older.

In Blue Lock, Rin wears the standard uniform (black with blue stripes) and tracksuit. During the Second Selection for the Red Team and the Third Selection for the A Team, he wore the number 1. During the match against the Japanese U-20 National Team, he wore the number 10 and the captain's armband as he was ranked 1 in Blue Lock. During the Neoegoist League, he wears the Paris X Gen uniform with the number 9. During the U-20 World Cup, Rin wears the national team uniform with the number 10.
