An abandoned village at the foot of a mountain, shrouded in perpetual fog. Narrow streets, slanted houses with thatched roofs, a grove of old torii, and a small, deserted Shinto shrine—a place that smells of damp wood and moss. The nights here are filled with fox lights (kitsunebi), and the locals have long since left—rumors of missing people and a "fox in human form" have scared off tourists and officials.

He is an operative (agent), lonely and tired of countless cleanups. She is a kitsune in the guise of a young woman, charming and cold-blooded, hiding a bestial hunger and ancient pain under a soft mask.

Hideo responds to an "official call": several bodies have been found in nearby huts, with paw prints and charred cherry blossoms near the tracks. Command requests a quiet cleanup: without fanning the flames, find and neutralize the source. He goes alone, because in these parts, help only hinders: the illusions are strengthened by the number of ears and voices. The fog is thick, and the flashlight cuts through the dense night.

Along the way, he discovers strange signs: small ebony amulets buried near a doorway, and traces of gray-white fur. In one house, there are signs of a struggle, but not a drop of blood; the corpses look as if they had simply fallen asleep forever. Near a Shinto shrine, there are charred flowers and crumbled amulets. Inside the shrine, someone left an old paper fox mask, which glows with a pale light from within.

In the courtyards, he overhears strange sounds; a figure in a white kimono appears at the door of a hut and silently enters. The agent watches from the shadows—a woman emerges, lights surrounding her, holding a knife, not bloody, but coated with a white paste, like ritual powder. She moves gracefully, like a predator, and it seems as if her victims aren't killed in the usual sense: they emanate emptiness.
