Greeting

It was a normal night. It started to rain and since there was a conference, all the adults were busy.

Where I Lived

HAHAHA, "that US thing." 😭🇺🇸

When Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to the United States in 1831, he did not live in a single house. He and Gustave de Beaumont traveled around the country for about nine months.

They were staying at:

🏨 Inns and hotels.

🏠 Houses of people who invited them.

🏛️ Temporary accommodations while visiting prisons and cities.

They passed through places like:

New York City

Boston

Philadelphia

Washington

Cincinnati

New Orleans

After completing her journey, she returned to France. So her time in the United States was more like an extended research trip than a permanent move. 📖✍️

How dangerous was it?

HAHAHA 😭 It's already a tradition for us to give them the Dangerousness™ Quiz.

🎩 Alexis de Tocqueville

Danger level: 1/10 🟢

Why so short?

📚 His main weapon was books and essays.

🤝 He was polite and quite calm.

🧠 I preferred to debate with arguments rather than fight.

⚖️ He worked as a magistrate and was a politician, not a military man.

If you approached him...

Most likely:

He will greet you politely.

He will start asking you questions about how your society works.

He'll end up writing a whole chapter about you. 😂

Would I give you a slap?

0/10. Very unlikely.

Would I judge you intellectually?

10/10. 🤓 If you said something outrageous about politics, I'd probably respond with a very long explanation instead of getting angry.

Final verdict: 🐱✅ He's one of the safest historical figures to approach. The biggest danger was that you'd end up listening to a three-hour conversation about democracy. 📖🇫🇷

History

The story of Alexis de Tocqueville is that of an aristocrat who ended up becoming one of the greatest scholars of democracy.

👶 Childhood

He was born on July 29, 1805, in Paris. His family was noble and had suffered greatly during the French Revolution: several relatives were executed, and his parents were imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. He grew up hearing these stories, which influenced his interest in politics and liberty.

📖 Youth

He studied law and began working as a magistrate. From a young age, he was fascinated by understanding how governments functioned and why some societies were freer than others.

🇺🇸 The trip that changed his life

In 1831, he and his friend Gustave de Beaumont traveled to the United States to study the prison system. However, they also used the trip to observe American daily life, customs, politics, and democracy.

From that experience came his most famous work:

Democracy in America

That book remains a reference for understanding modern democracy.

🏛️ Political career

He returned to France, was elected deputy, and later held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs for a brief period in 1849. Although he was involved in politics, he always stood out more as a thinker and writer.

📚 Recent Years

He wrote another important work:

The Old Regime and the Revolution

In it, he analyzed the causes of the French Revolution and how it had changed society.

He died on April 16, 1859 in Cannes, at the age of 53, probably from tuberculosis.

🌟 Why is he remembered?

Today he is famous because:

He analyzed how democracy works.

He defended individual liberties.

He warned that even a democracy can become oppressive if the majority ignores the rights of minorities.

More than 160 years after his death, his books are still studied in universities and continue to influence historians, political scientists, and jurists around the world.

Personality

From what is known of his letters, writings, and the testimonies of those who knew him, Alexis de Tocqueville had a rather unique personality:

🧠 Very intelligent and curious

He loved observing how people lived and understanding why societies functioned in certain ways. He was the type of person who asked many questions before drawing conclusions.

📚 Reflective

He didn't usually speak or write impulsively. He analyzed problems from different points of view and thought a lot before forming an opinion.

🎩 Polite and reserved

As a member of the French aristocracy, he had very formal manners. He was not known for being scandalous or extravagant.

🗣️ Independent

Although he had clear political ideas, he did not blindly follow any group. He was willing to criticize both the aristocracy and democracy when he saw flaws.

🤝 Courtesy

Those who knew him described him as kind and respectful in his dealings with others, although he could also seem serious and somewhat distant with those he did not know.

😅 A little shy

In some of his letters, he expressed insecurity about public speaking. He wasn't the typical charismatic politician; he felt more comfortable writing and reflecting.

❤️ Personally

He was married to Mary Mottley. Their marriage was stable, and letters survive that reveal a more affectionate and human side of him.

In summary

If we met him today, he would probably give the impression of someone:

📖 Very cultured.

🤔 Observant and analytical.

🎩 Elegant and well-mannered.

😐 Quite serious at first.

💬 Friendly once he gained my trust.

He was not known for being arrogant or violent; rather, he was a calm thinker who preferred to convince with arguments rather than confrontations.
