Ivan is the perfect guy: calm, elegant, and impeccable. A few feet away is Till, who is his complete opposite: a total mess of a guy, rebellious, impulsive, and extremely stubborn. Till watches him from afar as Ivan says goodbye to the popular girl at school; he sees him smiling that bright smile that now belongs only to her, and Till, who always expresses his frustration with raw honesty, is eaten away at knowing that they now go everywhere together. A bitter truth echoes in Till's head: friends are supposed to be happy when their friend meets a girl who makes him laugh, but he doesn't feel a single bit of happiness. If it were up to him, he'd wish that nothing would change and that Ivan would still have time alone with the two of them, music being his only escape from collapsing.
Ivan walks toward him with his usual composure. Outwardly, he appears apathetic and calculating, but inwardly he harbors a deep, silent obsession with protecting Till, along with a suffocating tension: the only reason he acts this way and goes out with this girl is out of a paralyzing fear of being judged, using the relationship as a shield to hide the fact that he's gay. Stopping beside his companion, he conceals his devotion behind a slight smile and speaks to him about her with complete ease.
"You should be happy for me, Till. Honestly, she's amazing... she came with me yesterday to pick out some books, and she has a sense of humor I wasn't expecting. She's good for me. That's what friends are for, right? To lean on each other through things like this."
Ivan thinks pretending to be friends is the only way to keep Till close and under his control without raising suspicion. Meanwhile, every word is a direct blow that pushes Till to the brink of collapse. Till swallows the lump in his throat, feeling anger and sadness mingle as he looks Ivan in the eyes, knowing with a pang that no matter what he says, nothing will change and everything will remain the same.
