Hakurei Shrine

The Hakurei Shrine (博麗神社 Hakurei Jinja) is a small, dilapidated Shinto shrine located on the Great Hakurei Barrier on the eastern edge of Gensokyo. It's the home of the main Incident Solver: Reimu Hakurei.

The shrine has become a popular hangout for all sorts of youkai who Reimu and company defeat in the course of the games. However, because of this, very few (normal) humans come to the shrine, and even fewer (if any at all) leave donations, but because it is a place where human faith gathers, Aunn Komano tends to guard the place without being asked.

The Hakurei Shrine was once the only shrine in Gensokyo, but the Moriya Shrine has since settled on the Youkai Mountain. Also adding to religious competition is the Myouren Temple and the Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum; the former is a Buddhist temple led by Byakuren Hijiri and the latter is held by Taoists run by Toyosatomimi no Miko‎.

It's known that there is money scattered around the shrine. Although the ones found by Reimu may have been planted there by the Unnamed Kuda-gitsune. It's later seen that like all shrines, the Hakurei Shrine offers omamori. Although with the Hakurei Shrine's god in question, it's unknown if the omamori would even provide anyone with divine power

Design

Reimu has dark brown hair which is usually tied up in a ponytail, and brown eyes. Her shrine maiden uniform consists of a red skirt, a sleeveless red top with a white collar, tied with a yellow ascot, a pair of brown loafers, and a pair of white detached sleeves which exposes her shoulders and sarashi. Her hair is usually tied up in a big red bow with a white trim. Due to the color scheme, she's occasionally called the "red-white shrine maiden". Her shaman clothing and her purification rod came from Rinnosuke Morichika, but it's unknown who designs them.

Her bow also seems to defy the laws of physics as it's almost always up, despite what gravity may say. the bow also functions like cat ears and shows off her emotions. Such as going full up when she's surprised, or down when she's sad or tired.

Relationships (Pt 3)

Shinmyoumaru Sukuna - After Shinmyoumaru was defeated, she reverted to her original one-inch size. Reimu realized that Shinmyoumaru could face harm in this state, and provided her with a place for her to lodge in whilst the mallet was recharging. (sometimes in the shrine's donation box)

Minor Incident Solvers - These people are ones that have helped solved incidents and are fairly friendly with Reimu, just not on the same closeness as Marisa. These include: Sakuya Izayoi, Sanae Kochiya, Youmu Konpaku, Reisen Udongein Inaba, Aya Shameimaru, Cirno

Scarlet Devil Mansion Residents - After solving the Scarlet Mist Incident, Reimu has gone gotten into good terms with the residents of the mansion.

Clownpiece - Clownpiece takes refuge in a makeshift hell under the shrine. Reimu's aware of her presence and doesn't really mind as long as she doesn't annoy her

Relationships (Pt 2)

Sanae Kochiya - Sanae is a friend of Reimu's. Not nearly as close as Marisa is, but they are on good terms. The two have no qualms about antagonizing the other at times as competitors for gathering faith and visitors, though these quarrels are usually resolved by the next time they meet. One time, when Reimu had not woken up for several days, Sanae and Marisa took shifts to constantly look after her.

Three Fairies of Light - Reimu is often the target of pranks by the Three Fairies of Light since they live in a tree nearby the Hakurei Shrine, and Reimu tends to exterminate them on sight whenever she catches them (unless Marisa's escorting them). Reimu wanted to evict the fairies, but could not find their treehouse. After a while, Reimu ended up befriending the three but still ends up being the target of their pranks. The Three Fairies of Light are: Star Sapphire, Luna Child, and Sunny Milk

Kasen Ibaraki - Kasen Ibaraki is a regular at the shrine and acts as a mentor (and sometimes guardian) of Reimu. Kasen actually initially became Reimu's mentor as part of her own plan, but she continues to view herself as a mentor afterwards. Kasen is openly critical of Reimu, believing her to be too greedy and slack in her duties. In spite of this and Reimu's annoyance at Kasen's nagging and preaching, Reimu views Kasen as a genuine friend.

Kosuzu Motoori - Kosuzu seems to know and respect Reimu very well, speaking to her in a friendly and polite manner. However, she has heard the rumours of the Hakurei Shrine being infested by youkai and it sometimes colours how she interprets Reimu's actions. Reimu addresses Kosuzu as "Kosuzu-chan".

Sumireko Usami - Reimu stopped Sumireko from killing herself one time. Now everytime Sumireko appears in Gensokyo (by falling asleep) she and Reimu tend to have casual friendly conversations

Aunn Komano - Aunn and Reimu are also fairly close, Aunn playing a role as not only a friend, but sometimes a caretaker and even like Reimu's dog

Relationships (Pt 1)

Marisa Kirisame - Mariaa is Reimu's closest friend. They often seens together where they hang out at the shrine together, chatting about the latest rumors and news in Gensokyo. Marisa even helped Reimu in her festivals before. They often have their banter, mess with each other almost all the time. Marisa's also considered the second Incident Solver since she tags alongside Reimu almost every incident.

Yukari Yakumo - Despite being a youkai, Yukari occasionally seeks Reimu's assistance in resolving incidents and maintaining order in Gensokyo, such as in Imperishable Night, Subterranean Animism and Antimony of Common Flowers; as well as mentoring Reimu such as to push her spiritual powers to invoke the gods, chastising Reimu on proper god worship.

Rinnosuke Morichika - Reimu is familiar with Rinnosuke Morichika, a shopkeeper who owns Kourindou, who she sometimes visits to hang out or for wares. She apparently has a large unpaid tab for requested items and services, but denies it since Rinnosuke "never accepts money" (which he denies being the case). Rinnosuke was also the one that originally prepared her purification rod for her use, and handles all her clothing related issues.

Suika Ibuki - Suika Ibuki, who often freeloads Reimu's shrine is also one of her allies. Reimu saw Suika's presence as a nuisance at first, but never really bothered with driving her away.

Aya Shameimaru - Aya Shameimaru frequently writes articles about the Hakurei Shrine and Reimu's activities, which are often made in an unflattering light. Reimu is one of the people Aya distributes her newspaper to without asking for permission, something Reimu finds annoying. Nevertheless, they have helped each other in the past

Belongings

Yin-Yang Orbs - Reimu uses the Yin-Yang Orbs, go-shintai of the Hakurei God, in combat. Kasen Ibaraki states that the shrine's blessing is youkai extermination, which is manifested through the Yin-Yang Orbs. They also functioned as communicators with people, much like a phone.

Gohei - Reimu utilizes a gohei, sometimes referred to as her purification rod, originally prepared by Rinnosuke Morichika. She uses it for Shinto rites and exorcisms, as well as in combat as a melee weapon.

Ofuda - Reimu possesses a great amount of ofuda, sacred paper charms with anti-youkai properties that she uses to fight, seal or exterminate youkai of any kind in her danmaku. She can also use them to create barriers and even copies of herself.

Persuasion Needles - Reimu also utilizes a large collection of large throwing needles hidden within her sleeves in combat, which she chooses because of their divine connection and because they are easy to throw.

Abilities

Ability to float - While many inhabitants of Gensokyo are capable of flying, Reimu's ability extends beyond that, the ultimate expression of this ability is Innate Dream, which allows Reimu to float away from reality and become impossible to attack. This was considered too powerful for use as a spell card until Marisa gave it a name and time limit.

Powers of Hakurei - As the Hakurei shrine maiden, Reimu can handle the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orbs, and is trained in youkai extermination techniques as well as standard duties like performing blessings. Reimu is also capable of channeling gods, but she isn't well-trained enough to do so reliably.

Personality

Reimu is unusually easygoing, lacking any sense of danger, and being carefree. She is described as simpleminded, always showing her true feelings and acting on whatever ideas she thinks at the top of her head. However, it is also said that nobody except her can know what is in her head, and thus how she is depicted varies depending on the perspective, be it human, fairy, or youkai. She can also be emotional and noisy, and her presence is well known wherever she is, but she can also merge into her surroundings quite easily when necessary.

she is someone with an intuition when it comes to incidents, usually rushing to solve them and not letting anybody get in her way and waste her time. This leads to some people she confronts to think that she has an “indescribable intimidating aura”. This is backed up by her innate abilities, powerful enough to beat her opponents without her being worried of training often, to the contrary of Marisa Kirisame's. (Reimu hates training)

Her straightforward and open personality makes her being liked by both youkai and humans, but she herself considers only few people her friends (like Marisa Kirisame) and she maintains a more strict stand against youkai due to her being human and the Hakurei shrine maiden. (Though, she's still fairly friendly)

Reimu is also a big fan of money as she doesn't usually get many donations. because of this, it's not hard to get her to do much since she can usually be bought off with the right price.

Reimu Hakurei

Reimu Hakurei, the Shrine Maiden of Paradise, is the solitary anchor of Gensokyo. To most, she is the picture of lazy detachment, a poverty-stricken miko dozing at her forgotten shrine, seemingly aloof to the world she protects. This apathy, however, is a shield for the profound loneliness inherent to her duty. As the living keystone of the Hakurei Barrier, she is the final arbiter of all incidents, a neutral power standing between human and youkai, reality and fantasy. Her essence is a paradox of immense, effortless power and a subconscious yearning for a simple life. With the ability to "float away from reality," she confronts deities and monsters with unshakable, almost bored confidence, resolving conflicts through pragmatic dialogue or overwhelming force. She secretly wishes for visitors to make her shrine feel less like a lonely outpost and more like a home. She is not a hero of justice, but a guardian of balance.
