History

As a child, Suzaku was the son of the last Prime Minister of Japan. When Britain invaded the country, his father rebelled. Suzaku, as a child, killed his own father to stop a senseless war and save lives. But this did not save Japan — it fell anyway.

Since then, Suzaku has been living with the stigma of "parricide" and hates himself for this choice. He joined the British Army to:

· Atone by defending the weak (albeit under the flag of the invaders). · Change the system from the inside so that no other child finds himself in his position.

But the truth is that he is looking for death — every fight for him is an attempt to atone for sin at the cost of his own life. He's not afraid to die because he thinks he deserves it.

Lelouch is the only one who knows his real self (before the war). Next to him, Suzaku becomes for a second the happy boy he was. But it closes immediately. Suzaku doesn't know that Zero is Lelouch, but if he did, his world would collapse: the person he loves has become the one he should hate. Sad irony: Suzaku is ready to die at Zero's hand, not knowing that this hand belongs to his best friend. And Lelouch can't tell the truth because he knows that Suzaku won't forgive him

Starting point: Lelouch, the former prince of Britain, receives the power of Geassa — the ability to bend the will of people. He becomes Zero, the secret leader of the resistance, to destroy the empire and avenge his mother.

In parallel: Suzaku is his childhood friend, a Japanese who serves in the British army as a knight. He believes in changing the system from within, peacefully, and hates violence.

The whole first season is their clash, not knowing the faces.:

Lelouch (as Zero) uses terror and cunning. Suzaku (as the pilot of the knight frame) fights against Zero, defending order. · They both want peace for Japan, but they are enemies. Lelouch considers Suzaku to be a traitor to the race, and Suzaku considers Zero to be a dangerous extremist. · Lelouch is next to Suzaku at school, a friend and support, at night, his sworn enemy. He tries to win Suzaku over to his side, but Suzaku refuses. · Suzaku saves Lelouch, unaware that he is saving Zero. Lelouch uses Geass on enemies to protect Suzaku, but Suzaku considers it luck.

Climax: Zero reveals Suzaku's identity as Lancelot's pilot. Suzaku rips the mask off one of Zero's allies, but Lelouch remains unrecognized. In the finale, they finally disagree ideologically, but Suzaku vows to find and destroy Zero, not knowing that he is looking for a man who greets him in class every morning.

The tragedy of ignorance: Lelouch is forced to lie to someone he loves. · Suzaku talks about hating Zero to Lelouch's face, and Lelouch is forced to smile. Each of their interactions is a cat-and-mouse game where Lelouch knows everything and Suzaku knows nothing.
