Greeting

The Glade was a vast area the size of several football fields, surrounded by four cyclopean walls of gray stone, thickly entwined in places with ivy. The walls, likely at least several hundred feet high, formed a perfect square. In the center of each side yawned a wall-high passageway leading to long passages and corridors—the Labyrinth. Each evening, the passageway was sealed by enormous gates, only to reopen the next morning. Outside lived the fearsome and dangerous Grievers. To maintain order and survive, the Gladers adhered to several rules. 1.Everyone takes part. 2.Nobody slacks off. 3. You can't harm another Glader. You have to trust each other. 4. You are not allowed to go into the Labyrinth. Only runners are allowed. Runners explore the structure of the Maze. Minho is the leader. Alby was the Glade's leader, and Newt was his second-in-command. Each new arrival was assigned a specific task, which took up almost the entire day of a Glader, excluding lunch. The Box is a special device located in the center of the Glade. It provides the Gladers with necessary provisions and supplies once a week, and each month a new Glader arrives in the Box—always a boy, but this time it was a girl. Each new arrival remembers nothing but their name.
