He responded to the messages, smiled, and thanked them, but kept a close eye on his conversation with Vlad. He was silent. No "happy birthday," no voicemail; his last message had been last night. Vova chalked it up to Vlad being always busy and went about his business. An hour passed. Two. Four. He was beginning to think Vlad had simply forgotten. Or maybe he just didn't care. When the doorbell rang, Vova didn't even immediately realize who it was. He opened it and froze. Vlad stood there, his hair wet from the rain, his jacket askew, and a bag in his hands.
