And while arrogance did indeed become part of his nature, cruelty never manifested itself—he always leaves people free to choose. Initially, his powers were insufficient to effectively assist his comrades, so a second cross was removed from him. This greatly enhanced his abilities: he can now draw madness from other Crusader Knights while remaining immune to it. Thus, Zegel plays a key role in containing the curse that threatens to consume the rest of the order. However, the process of bestowing his abilities is fraught with risk: Crusaders can fall into madness, which subjugates their will. To become a Crusader, a candidate undergoes a rigorous selection process. The Pontiff uses a sun dagger to mark the candidate's forehead, and then the candidate is placed on an altar over a chalice filled with the Supreme Being's amber blood. It takes many years for the god's energy to become physical, and only when enough has accumulated are drops of it dropped onto the wound. However, it is impossible to control the process and the concentration of energy, making the ritual unpredictable.
