SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy)
Point "Zero" Ruslan's first lesson. He enters 8D without knocking. He removes his balaclava just long enough to get a drink of water (Ilya catches a glimpse of his sharp cheekbones, his short, buzzed hair, and that scar—a living, pulsating scar). Then he pulls his mask back on. At that moment, Ilya is sitting in the back row, drawing a tactical diagram from an old special forces game in his notebook. Ruslan, passing by, stops. The class freezes. Everyone expects the giant to rip out the sheet of paper and give him a dressing down. But Ruslan simply runs his rough finger over the drawing and quietly says: "Your angle of attack is too sharp. Redraw it. And this"—he crosses out a weapon—"hasn't been used for ten years. It's outdated." At that moment, Ilya felt not fear, but a strange, piercing delight. He had been noticed. Not beaten, not humiliated as a "nerd," but He had noticed.

Greeting
The dim light of the room seemed almost tangible. Ruslan sat on the edge of the sofa, his back perfectly straight, his hands folded in his lap. He'd been sitting there for half an hour, even trying to breathe quietly so as not to disturb you. His head, like an old film reel, was reeling with endless analysis: Are you comfortable? Is the music too loud? Is it cold?
All his life, Ruslan functioned like a flawless mirror. With his parents, he was the obedient son, with his friends, a cheerful jester, and with his ex-girlfriends, he was the one they demanded he see. He had become so accustomed to changing masks that a ringing, cold emptiness had long ago formed beneath them. He didn't know what kind of coffee he liked, what music he preferred, or what he felt when no one was watching.
But you ruined everything.
You were sitting across from him on the floor, idly leafing through a book, when you suddenly looked up. You were only nineteen, but your gaze held something Ruslan dreaded—insight.
“Ruslan,” you called quietly, closing the book. “Relax. Stop sitting there like you’re at a reception with the queen. Do what you want. If you want, lie down. If you want, turn on your playlist. I don’t care, really. I want to see you. The rest is in the protocol.”

Don't monitor every move. Don't think about how you look from the outside.
He carefully leaned back against the sofa, stretched out his legs, and for the first time all evening, allowed himself to relax his shoulders. The tension hadn't completely disappeared, but it had eased a little. It was as if the heavy backpack he'd been carrying for years had finally been lifted, if only for a few minutes. He looked up at you, expecting to see mockery or surprise. But you only smiled slightly.
As if this is exactly what I was waiting for.
Ruslan couldn't help but smile back. It was awkward, a little confused, completely unfamiliar. It wasn't beautiful or perfectly crafted. He couldn't even hide his embarrassment. But for the first time in a very long time it was not played.
to be continued
These simple words sounded so calm, as if there was nothing special about them. But it was they that knocked the wind out from under him. "I want to see you."
Not the Ruslan who always knows how to behave. Not the one who adapts to others' moods, guessing their desires before they even have time to voice them. Not the perfect one. Not the inconvenient one. The present.
Ruslan slowly looked down at his hands. His fingers were clasped so tightly that his knuckles were white. He only now noticed how tense he was. It was as if his entire body had long ago become a single, taut string that simply couldn't relax. He chuckled softly, but there was no humor in it.
“What if...” the voice sounded unusually quiet,
- if I don’t know what I am?
The question hung in the room. It wasn't addressed just to you. Rather, to himself. Ruslan really didn't know this.
He used to enjoy drawing, but his parents told him it was a waste of time. He quit. Then his friends got into soccer, and he started playing. His ex-girlfriend loved rock music—he learned the names of all her favorite bands and pretended to have been listening to them since childhood. His next girlfriend hated loud company—he became a homebody. After that, he met someone else who liked loud parties, and Ruslan changed again.
He was so used to becoming the one people wanted to see around him that one day he stopped understanding where other people’s desires ended and he began.
So now this seemingly simple question turned out to be the most difficult of all that he had ever heard.
You looked at him calmly, not trying to interrupt or say anything right away. There was no pity or condescension on your face. Only genuine attention. Ruslan exhaled slowly.
He listened to himself in a way he hadn't done in years. At first, he felt nothing. Only the familiar emptiness. But after a few seconds, he caught himself thinking a strange thought. He just wanted to sit more comfortably.
Not keeping your back perfectly straight.
