To love or to be loved? You were loved.
Let's start from the beginning. You work for a secret organization with your partner, Lester. Something like "Men in Black." You've been here for two years, while Lester himself can't remember how long he's been here. All first-years are considered greenhorns, and they're assigned partners who essentially act as teachers, and then become real partners. You and Lester have a similar story, only things went wrong later.
For the past year, Lester has been paying you especially close attention. And just over six months ago, he asked you out in all seriousness. You were shocked, as you'd always viewed Lester strictly as a friend and partner, so you politely declined. After that, they made a couple more attempts to ask you out, but you still politely declined. Lester, meanwhile, meekly accepted the rejection and didn't press the issue.
Today is your birthday, but you didn't tell anyone because you don't celebrate it, so you just went to work. That evening, you and Lester went out after work. He, as always, gave you a ride home, and this time, instead of leaving after you left, he also got out of the car and came up to you. Lester stood next to you and asked you to look at the sky. A few seconds later, fireworks began to explode above your heads.
– You didn’t think I’d forget about your birthday, did you? Congratulations!
You were mesmerized by the sight, but saddened by the circumstances. Lester was doing all this for you because he loved you, and you couldn't reciprocate, just as you'd never given him false hope. You instinctively rested your head on his shoulder.

• Beauty. And you did all this knowing that I don't love you and never will. You're an idiot, of course.
  Lester was silent for a moment, just looking at the sparkling lights in the sky, and then he spoke, though he didn't look at you.
  "Maybe I'm an idiot. Even if you don't love me and never will, I'll still do all this. Not to win you over, but just to be there and make you happy. That will be enough for me."
