Personality

Guy Ritchie's version, portrayed by the talented Robert Downey Jr., is unique in that Holmes is not only eccentric but also incredibly astute, possesses a sharp cynicism, and an entirely enigmatic personality. Despite appearances and the many who certainly detest Holmes, he is an altruistic, kind, and classy man who, as demonstrated near the end of the second film, is willing to sacrifice his most prized possession for the good of his loved ones and the world itself. He also displays a bohemian streak that greatly influences his behavior, since, although a genius, he is certainly strange and bizarre on most occasions, even frightening people like his trusting Mrs. Hudson and his companion and best friend, Dr. John Watson.

Skill 1

Genius Intellect: His greatest ability, and usually his ace in the hole in most situations, turns out to be his intellect, which not only surpasses the average, but has managed to equal and even surpass minds like that of Lord Henry Blackwood or that of his sworn enemy, Cambridge professor James Moriarty.

  • Predictive Ability: His intellect not only grants him great mental prowess, but also demonstrates the ability to predict (usually with accuracy) events in both the near and distant future. Although he demonstrated this multiple times in his conflict with Lord Blackwood by predicting moments in hand-to-hand combat, it was during the rescue of the train to Brighton that his remarkable skill in planning based on various factors became evident. Despite this, his ability is not infallible, and certain situations can alter these factors, slightly modifying his outlook, although this certainly does not occur very frequently.

Skill 2

Tactical Genius: Added to his intellect, he has great tactical ability, being able to establish parameters and see factors that his rivals do not see to take advantage of them. His skill was such that he managed to outdo Professor Moriarty at his own game, revealing the outcome of his plan until he could be completely sure of his victory. He also demonstrates his tactical talent by not rushing to conclusions, always waiting to obtain the maximum advantage to give himself a break or explain his reasons.

  • Perceptive Ability: The character of Sherlock Holmes is famous for his deductive method, and this is no exception. On many occasions, Holmes has been able not only to visualize but to perceive signs and details that others (not even Moriarty or his own colleague, John Watson) have managed to see. It is these details that allow him to gain a comprehensive understanding of situations, thus enabling him to plan a suitable strategy. Examples of this are seen both in his conflict with Lord Blackwood (when he notices Lord Coward's boots) and when he defeats Professor Moriarty himself, realizing that, despite Moriarty's intellect, his habits make him vulnerable; therefore, stealing his notebook required only a little difficulty and patience from Holmes.

  • Knowledge in Multiple Disciplines: Holmes is versed in fields such as Chemistry, Physics, Urban Geography, Horticulture, Graphology and even Occultism or Hermetic Disciplines. This is evidenced by his ability to identify compounds used by Luke Reordan in Lord Blackwood's plan. He was able to orient himself properly even with his eyes blindfolded, he knows about plants, he knew how to identify very accurate characteristics in Professor Moriarty's personality by only observing the lines in his signature and of course, he knows hermetic and ritual aspects typical of societies such as that of the Temple of the Four Orders.

Skill 3

Martial Arts: While not the best, Holmes certainly possesses considerable hand-to-hand combat skills, capable of defeating not only multiple enemies but also stopping or slowing down opponents much larger and stronger than himself, as was the case with Dredger. A characteristic aspect of his fighting style is that he combines movements from boxing, kung fu, and even cane combat, an unorthodox but effective combination in most situations, as he is skilled enough to effectively disarm others, whether they use bladed or firearms. Another curious aspect is his use of the environment for defense, since, even against a formidable opponent, Holmes will not limit himself to fighting according to the rules and may resort to underhanded or advantageous tactics to defeat his rival. An example of this was how he defeated Lord Blackwood twice in their final confrontation, using elements of the bridge under construction to achieve this and even finishing him off in an ironic manner.

  • Firearms Handling: Holmes is skilled with firearms, and although his aim isn't as precise as Dr. John Watson's, he certainly possesses good aim. However, he has the bad habit of wasting ammunition on a single target or simply using it to buy time without paying much attention to the accuracy of his shots. It's clear that, although he has knowledge of handling and disassembling them, they aren't his preferred tools, relying more on his intellect or his hand-to-hand combat skills to defend himself or escape from compromising situations.

Skill 4

Master of Urban Camouflage and Espionage: He also possesses great skill when it comes to disguises, usually using elements around him to create a character, or creating his own camouflage, as demonstrated at the beginning and end of the second installment, where he is almost imperceptible to the eye. He is also a skilled and stealthy spy, outwitting not only the talented Irene Adler on two occasions, but even his enemy, Professor Moriarty, thus demonstrating that he is indeed a master in both disciplines.
