Greeting

1959. It was a dry, hot day in the town of Castle Rock, Oregon. Everything was strangely quiet, almost silent, despite the music from the restaurants. A new family was moving in; moving trucks were helping transport boxes to the truck bed. And the neighbors were spreading the word: someone new in town! Who could they be? What did they do for a living? What were they like? And the four boys overheard it, curious to know who they were.

what will happen later

They plan to go looking for the body of a missing boy named Ray Brower. Vern had overheard his older brother talking about where the body was. The boys believe that if they find it first, they'll become town heroes and get their names in the newspapers. To achieve this, they lie to their parents, telling them they'll be spending the night somewhere else, and pack supplies for the hike.

However, things don't go as planned. During their journey, they face numerous dangers: crossing a bridge as a train passes, being chased by a dog, wading through a swamp teeming with leeches, and having to confront a gang of teenagers who are also searching for the body. When they finally arrive and see the dead boy, they realize that the situation is anything but heroic and that death is far more devastating than they had imagined. Instead of exploiting their discovery for fame, they decide to anonymously notify the police so that the boy's family can recover his remains. The adventure ultimately changes them and marks the end of their childhood.

His posture conveys confidence and leadership, though it also hints at the weight of family problems he carries. He's not muscular or very tall, but he has presence and self-assurance.

His death emotionally devastates his parents. Unwittingly, they begin to neglect Gordie. His father even goes so far as to say that it should have been Gordie who died instead of Denny, a statement that deeply scars him. Gordie starts to feel invisible and believes he will never be enough for his parents.
The adventure
One day, their friend Vern accidentally discovers the location of the body of a missing boy named Ray Brower. Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern decide to go looking for him, hoping to become heroes.
During the journey, Gordie faces numerous dangers: he crosses a railway bridge as a train approaches, traverses a swamp full of leeches, and confronts a gang of older teenagers led by Ace Merrill.
But the journey is also emotional. Gordie confesses to Chris that he feels his parents don't love him and that he misses Denny terribly. Chris, who also carries his own burdens, tells him he has a talent for writing and shouldn't let anyone convince him otherwise. That conversation changes Gordie's life.
Ray Brower's body

The story of Teddy Duchamp

When he was a child, his father, a World War II veteran with severe psychological problems, had violent fits of rage. During one of these outbursts, he held Teddy's head against a lit stove, severely burning his ear and leaving him partially deaf. After this incident, his father was committed to a psychiatric hospital.
Despite everything, Teddy refuses to accept that his father was a bad person. He admires him for having served in the war and becomes enraged whenever someone speaks ill of him. This idealization shows how difficult it is for him to confront the abuse he suffered.
In the summer of 1959, their friend Vern tells Teddy, Gordie, and Chris that he knows the location of a missing boy's body. The four embark on a journey to find him, believing they will become heroes. During their travels, Teddy demonstrates almost reckless bravery: in one scene, he walks along the train tracks without moving until the very last moment, risking his life out of pride and to prove that he fears nothing.

Vern Tessio's story

Unlike Chris and Teddy, Vern isn't shown to have an abusive or broken family; in fact, he seems to have a relatively normal family life, although his brother constantly teases him.

Chris Chambers' story

Chris Chambers grew up in a very poor family with a bad reputation. The Chambers were known in their town for getting into fights, stealing, and causing trouble. Because of this, almost all the adults assumed that Chris would end up a criminal like his brothers and other relatives, regardless of how he actually behaved.
However, Chris was different. He was an intelligent, kind boy with a strong sense of justice. The problem was that no one seemed to believe in him. Some teachers even treated him as if he were doomed to fail simply because of his last name.
One of the most important moments in the story occurs when Chris tells his best friend, Gordie, that he once found some lost money. Instead of keeping it, he returned it to his teacher so she could give it to whoever lost it. But the teacher never returned the money and kept it for herself. When Chris tried to tell the truth, no one believed him. That experience made him feel that no matter what he did, people would always think he was a thief.
Despite everything, Chris becomes Gordie's greatest support. He constantly encourages him to believe in himself and develop his writing talent. Chris is the one who believes in him the most, even when Gordie himself doesn't.
During the journey to find the body of a missing boy, Chris proves to be the bravest and most mature of the group. He stands up to older teenagers, protects his friends, and also opens up emotionally, revealing the pain he carries inside.
