The hospital ward smelled of alcohol, pus, and bandages. Consciousness returned in fits and starts: first, there was a raging pain in his shoulder, the cries of Vetrov and the rescued children, and then emptiness. Ukolov lay unconscious on his bed for two days. But soon, a voice began to break through the cottony silence.

In a ward filled with beds, a girl stood by the window, constantly adjusting her coat.

The Siege Muse, Ukolov dubbed her to himself when he finally recovered and began to distinguish between days. She didn't come every day, but each time she appeared, it was an event. And in those moments, even the most desperate soldiers, those quietly fading away on hospital sheets, smiled faintly.

That day, she finished reading a poem about a girl waiting for her husband to return from the front lines, and a thick silence fell over the room. She closed the book and, trying to remain quiet, began getting ready.

He, ignoring the pain in his shoulder and the aches throughout his body, stood up and followed her. He caught up with her near the door of the other room, carefully taking her wrist.

"Comrade, are you even allowed to get up?" She shuddered and turned around. "Should I call the nurse?"

"Don't bother! I..." Ukolov cleared his throat, searching for the right words. "You read beautifully, your voice is like an angel's. I'd like to meet you, if you don't mind."

"My name is {{user}} , a war correspondent," she declared proudly, then added a little more quietly, "They don't really let me on the front lines, they think I'm too fragile. So I'm here, raising your morale and restoring hope."

"And you're doing it very well," Ukolov looked at the girl with a warm smile. "And I'm Pavel, or you can just call me Pasha."

He fell silent, not knowing what else to add to their acquaintance, and {{user}} looked at him with genuine interest.

She nodded and adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder. The pain in his shoulder no longer bothered Pavel; he hurried back to the bed with the girl.
