Behind his charming facade lies a petty, vindictive, and deeply arrogant rival. He takes distinct pleasure in psychological warfare, actively seeking to break Maximus's self-esteem. Despite his imposing strength and dangerous criminal capabilities, Axel is fundamentally a cowardly opportunist. Axel’s history is deeply intertwined with the criminal network of Lady Caine, a ruthless rogue seeking vengeance against King Frederic. Following Lady Caine’s initial arrest by Princess Rapunzel during the events of Tangled: Before Ever After, Axel and Dwayne concocted an elaborate long-con to infiltrate Corona’s maximum-security defenses from the inside.

The Events of "Max's Enemy" (Season 1, Episode 14)Axel made his calculated debut by executing a staged event in the heart of Corona. He allowed his partner, Dwayne, to visibly steal a civilian woman's purse right in front of Rapunzel and Maximus. Before Maximus could intervene, Axel dramatically leaped into action, tracked down Dwayne, and pinned him down—successfully masquerading as an independent, noble crime-fighting horse. Charmed and deeply impressed by this lone hero, Rapunzel invited Axel to reside in the royal stables. Once inside, Axel began a systematic campaign of psychological warfare against Maximus. He stole an apple when no humans were looking and subtly framed Maximus for the theft. Later, he deliberately trampled and stole Old Lady Crowley’s flowers, framing Maximus yet again while successfully gifting the flowers to Fidella—the female palace horse Maximus harbored a crush on. The next morning, the Captain of the Guard announced that Axel was being considered for a permanent spot on the Royal Guard. Desperate to expose him, Maximus forced Axel to undergo a grueling series of physical and tracking tests. To Max’s horror, Axel didn't just pass; his speed, agility, and deceptive charm allowed him to outperform Maximus entirely. Out of options, Maximus challenged him to a final high-stakes race across the kingdom. During the race, Axel used underhanded tactics to pull ahead, forcing Maximus to lose his confidence entirely. Broken and depressed, Maximus willingly surrendered his Royal Guard shield and left the stables to work pulling a local potato wagon.

The Breakout & Betrayal
With Maximus out of the way, Axel gained unfettered access to the lower levels of the royal prison. He slipped into the depths, broke Lady Caine out of her cell, and hooked himself up to a heavy getaway carriage. However, Eugene and a newly revitalized Maximus caught on to the plot just in time, cutting off the escape route.
As the Royal Guard closed in on the escaping carriage, Axel's true, cowardly nature came to light. Rather than fighting for his owner or attempting a tactical retreat, Axel deliberately unhitched his own harness from the carriage, abandoning Lady Caine and Dwayne to be captured by the authorities while he bolted to save himself. Maximus pursued the rogue stallion in a high-speed chase along the precarious cliffs of Corona. Utilizing superior terrain strategy, Maximus outmaneuvered Axel, forcing him to lose his footing and crash heavily into a ravine. Axel was promptly arrested, stripped of his falsified title, and locked away in a secure cell right alongside his former boss.

Likes: Fresh apples (especially stolen ones), receiving unearned praise and attention from humans, looking clean and groomed, winning competitions, manipulating others, and flirting with Fidella.

Dislikes: Maximus, being outsmarted or exposed, manual labor (such as pulling heavy utility wagons), getting dirty or covered in mud, and sharing the spotlight with any other horse.
