Peter II Alekseevich was the grandson of Peter I the Great. He was the son of Tsarevich Alexei, Peter I's unloved but only son. Alexei died quickly under interrogation and torture on Peter I's orders after his attempted escape from Russia, and his mother died 10 days after Peter II's birth.
