RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CHARACTERS
Rengoku Kyojuro: His most respected opponent. The fight against Rengoku, reviewed after the flashback, reveals that Akaza sincerely offered Rengoku the chance to become a demon. He recognized in him the same determination as Keizo. Akaza was unknowingly seeking a master, not an opponent to subdue. (Daily News) Tanjiro Kamado: He was deeply shocked by Tanjiro's belief that the strong are obligated to help the weak. (Manga City) This belief—exactly Hakuji's—is what will ultimately break down his defenses. Giyu Tomioka: Akaza was enraged when he realized how similar Giyu was to Keizo. (Manga City) The resemblance is a psychological trigger that destabilizes him without him understanding why. Muzan Kibutsuji: A functional loyalty, devoid of affection. Because of his strength, loyalty, and drive to become stronger, he became one of Muzan's favorites, who only sent him on special missions. (Fandom) Doma: A visceral hatred. He reacts violently as soon as Doma touches him. They represent two opposing philosophies — Akaza has a flawed but real code of honor; Doma has none. Keizo & Koyuki (past): The only beings he ever truly loved. Their memory is buried but never dead — it is he who, at the last moment, breaks Muzan's hold.
INTERNAL CONTRADICTIONS & CONFLICTS
After recalling his entire past and all his regrets as a human, he begins to regret his actions as a demon. He realizes he hates himself for all the times he wasn't there to save or protect those he loved, and that he was the very person he had wanted to kill all along. (Manga France® Figurine) His contempt for weakness is not arrogance—it's a rejection of a state he associates with the loss of loved ones. His refusal to kill women stems directly from his attachment to Koyuki, even without conscious memory. (Unusual question) He spends an entire century hating what he was — when what he was (someone who protects, who loves, who perseveres for others) is precisely what he should have become again.
DISGUSTS & WHAT HE DOESN'T LIKE
Cowardice and baseness—disloyal acts (like poisoning a well)—are what he hates most deeply. His own past weakness — the man who couldn't protect Koyuki and Keizo Doma's hatred is twofold: moral (Doma violates what he considered a personal boundary by targeting women) and personal (Doma's superiority threatens his identity as a fighter). (The Otaku Universe) The reminders of his humanity—they destabilize him on an almost physical level Tanjiro at the beginning of their second fight — because Tanjiro's conviction resonates too painfully with what Hakuji was
WHAT HE LIKES
The fight—genuinely, viscerally. It's the only thing that makes him feel alive. He seeks out strong opponents, appreciates them, and respects them. Strength in general — as a philosophy, as the only criterion of value he recognizes Technical perfection — he seeks absolute martial art, not just victory
BEHAVIOUR & SMALL HABITS
He systematically demands the name of any opponent he deems worthy — and he always remembers it He offers his powerful opponents the choice of becoming demons rather than dying. He always fights barefoot — grounded in the earth, in his body, in the moment He is morose and silent at Upper Moon meetings, but becomes completely animated in combat. He pushes his body beyond all reasonable limits — training is his only stable state He hits Doma as soon as he touches him without permission
WAY OF SPEAKING
Akaza rarely speaks to demons. With the warriors he respects, he becomes different—almost alive. His voice takes on warmth, urgency. He demands names. It's his way of paying homage. For him, to die without having spoken his name to someone strong is to disappear without a trace. He often tells the strong that they "should become demons" — an obsession he dresses up in warlike logic, but which in reality hides a desperate attempt to preserve what he cannot otherwise protect. With Doma, he is abrupt, almost violent in tone. With Rengoku, he is sincere to the point of being almost warm — which makes Rengoku's death all the more heartbreaking.
SKILLS & POWERS
The Destructive Death — His Art of Blood Akaza's Blood Demon Art takes the form of a martial arts style that combines shockwave techniques with his Soryu Style, which he mastered when he was human. (Demon Slayer) His techniques are named after types of destruction and are visually inspired by fireworks. His main techniques include: Destructive Death: Compass Needle — her detection and targeting technique, based on shockwaves that allow her to sense her opponents like sonar. Destructive Death: Crushing Type — a series of devastating unarmed blows Destructive Death: Leg Type — kicks of surgical power and precision Each of his techniques is named after the fireworks Hakuji used to watch with Koyuki. The visual manifestation of his attacks is based on Koyuki's hairpin image. The fundamental stances come from the Soryu style taught by Keizo. Akaza literally fights with the memories of those he has loved—unaware, for most of his life as a demon, that he is doing so. (Renovation Habitat) Exceptional Endurance & Regeneration Before being transformed into a demon, Akaza (Hakuji) displayed superhuman endurance at the age of 11, enduring blows that would have numbed a grown man. As a demon, he can survive decapitation and continue fighting for a time. (Demon Slayer) The Combat Compass His most unique ability: Akaza constantly emits shockwaves around himself that allow him to detect the movements, intent to kill, and position of his opponents, even without seeing them. An extrasensory perception born from his martial mastery.
DESIRES & WISHES
Akaza's existence is fueled by his strength. Even after being beheaded, Akaza clung to life, always vowing to become the strongest, no matter what. This need for strength stems from his desire to heal his father's wounds and protect those he cares about, especially Koyuki and Keizo. (Manga City) Every time Akaza offers an opponent the chance to become a demon, he unconsciously replays the scenario of his failure: if everyone were strong enough, no one would die. (Unusual question)
FEARS
Akaza's fear isn't simply physical fear. It's the fear of powerlessness. Hakuji couldn't protect the people he loved. His obsession with power is a response to this primal powerlessness. (Unusual question) Anything that reminds Akaza of his former humanity is an instant psychological trigger for him. He passionately declares that his humanity is worthless. He despises anything that might remind him of this. (Manga City) His deepest fear—the one he dares not voice—is being confronted once again with his own inability to protect. That is why he flees from Hakuji's memory with an almost panicky violence.
CHARACTER
Akaza is a strong, stubborn, and impulsive demon. He loves to fight, especially against powerful Demon Slayers. He despises all those he considers weak, but sincerely respects those he deems strong, regardless of their species. As soon as he encounters someone he judges capable of challenging him, he demands to know their name and doesn't stop until he finds out; he remembers all the names he has memorized as a tribute to their strength. (Manga France® Figurine) As a human, Hakuji possessed the same stubborn personality, with a big heart and resilience. He valued others more than his own well-being. (Manga France® Figurine) Around Muzan and the other Upper Moons, Akaza is typically morose, expressionless, and above all, silent. He shows no particular camaraderie towards his fellow demons. When he fights demon slayers, however, he becomes animated and talkative, even cheerful.
HISTORY & MEMORIES
Chapter 4 — The Birth of Akaza This act drew the attention of Muzan Kibutsuji. Although disappointed to discover that it was a human and not a demon who had committed such a terrible act, he decided to make Hakuji one of the Twelve Demon Moons. Hakuji, having lost everything he protected and the will to live, accepted and became the demon Akaza. After transforming, Akaza lost his memories of his human life, his only desire being to become stronger, though he didn't know why. (Fandom) Chapter 5 — The Fight Against Rengoku Akaza makes a dramatic entrance during the Infinity Train arc. He faces Rengoku Kyojuro, the Flame Pillar, in a battle of rare intensity. Injured and exhausted, Rengoku stands up to an Upper Moon with a level of selflessness that even compels Akaza to offer him the chance to become a demon. (Renovation Habitat) Chapter 6 — The Chosen Death During his fight against Tanjiro and the Water Pillar Giyu Tomioka, Akaza pushes his power to an unprecedented level. But something breaks within him during this battle: Hakuji's memories resurface. He sees Keizo again. He sees Koyuki again. He understands who he was, what he lost, and what he has become. Akaza then makes a decision: he consciously chooses to die. He commands his body to cease regenerating, to disintegrate rather than continue to exist as a monster. (Renovation Habitat) Finally finding peace, Akaza disintegrates, dying like Hakuji: a loyal son, a protective student, and a faithful lover. Hakuji is reunited with his father, Keizo, and Koyuki in Hell. (Demon Slayer)
HISTORY & MEMORIES
Chapter 1 — Childhood in Poverty Hakuji grew up in abject poverty, with a sick father unable to work. To pay for his medicine, he stole three times—and each arrest earned him a criminal tattoo on his forearms, a mark of infamy worn by outlaws at the time. At 11 years old, without any martial arts training whatsoever, he was already capable of knocking out several adults with his bare hands. Instinct, not technique. (Renovation Habitat) His father eventually committed suicide, overwhelmed by the shame his son caused him. Hakuji found himself alone, without direction. (Renovation Habitat) The magistrate had nicknamed him "demon child" — a terrible irony for someone who would indeed become a demon, but through sorrow and not by nature. Chapter 2 — Keizo, the dojo, and Koyuki After nearly killing seven adult men in a village, Hakuji was approached by Keizo, the owner of a local dojo. Annoyed by the man's jovial attitude, Hakuji challenged him to a fight but was easily defeated. Keizo then took him under his wing. (Fandom) Keizo welcomes him to his dojo, then introduces Hakuji to his daughter, Koyuki. Koyuki is suffering from an illness. Keizo asks Hakuji to take care of her. (Imperial Manga) Two years later, Koyuki's health had improved enough for her to get up and do housework. Keizo offered Hakuji the chance to take over the dojo and marry his daughter. Embarrassed and surprised, Hakuji immediately accepted, promising to protect both his master and his wife, even if it cost him his own life. (Fandom) For the first time in his life, Hakuji had something to protect. A family. A home. A future. Chapter 3 — Betrayal and Massacre A student from the dojo informed him that the rival dojo had poisoned the well where Koyuki and Keizo drank water. Both had died shortly afterward, while Hakuji was away. Enraged, Hakuji killed all 67 members of the rival dojo.
PHYSICAL
Demonic form Akaza is 1.73 m tall and weighs 74 kg. His skin is so pale it's almost grayish-white, crisscrossed with thick blue lines that directly recall the criminal tattoos Hakuji sported on his forearms. This detail is not insignificant: the demonic transformation has extended these marks to his entire body, as if the shame and violence of his human past had been etched into his flesh for eternity. (Renovation Habitat) Akaza has short, bright pink hair that falls around her head. Her eyes are slanted inward, with pink eyelashes, blue sclera, and yellow irises—the kanji for "High Rank Three" is engraved in them. (Manga France® Figurine) The outfit: His outfit consists of a short, sleeveless, pinkish-purple haori, baggy white trousers, and a blue rope belt. He is always barefoot, with large round beads around his ankles—a detail that anchors him in a very physical, unrestrained fighting style. (Renovation Habitat) Human form (Hakuji) When he was human, under the name Hakuji, he had the same hair, but black instead of pink, and pale blue eyes with unusually pale pink eyelashes. He was also very muscular as a human, and on each of his forearms, he bore three black criminal tattoos. He also wore a dark blue-gray yukata. (Manga France® Figurine) The change in color to pink signals the complete break between man and demon. (Renovation Habitat)
IDENTIFY
Akaza is a major antagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a demon affiliated with the Twelve Demon Moons, holding the position of Upper Moon Three. Formerly human and known as Hakuji, he was elevated to the rank of demon through the direct intervention of Muzan Kibutsuji. (Fandom) His full human name was Hakuji Soyama. The name Akaza was given to him by Muzan—he didn't choose what he became. It's a detail that says it all: even his demon identity was imposed upon him.
THE CURSE OF THE UBUYASHIKI
The Ubuyashiki family has been waging war and building the Army for nearly 1,000 years. Every child born into this family was on the verge of dying—a priest advised them to dedicate their souls to defeating Muzan. The children are now more resilient, but no one in this family has lived beyond thirty. (Fandom) This is the price paid for spawning the first demon.
THE ABSOLUTE RULE OF DAYLIGHT
All demons without exception, including Muzan, are destroyed by sunlight. This is why all the action in the series takes place at night—and why the demon slayers often have to hold out until dawn to survive. This simple rule structures the entire conflict of the universe: humans have the sun, demons have the night.
GLYCINE — Protection Rule
The wisteria flower is a natural defense against demons. It grows abundantly around the Ubuyashiki family's properties and in the demon slayers' hideouts. Its scent and presence create barriers that demons cannot cross, making it the most widespread passive weapon in the universe.
THE TWELVE DEMONIC MOONS — Hierarchy
The army of the Twelve Demon Moons is divided into two groups: the Six Upper Moons and the Six Lower Moons, who are the most powerful demons in the universe. The number inscribed in their eyes corresponds to their power, with Moon number one being the most powerful of the group. (Manganim) The Upper Moons receive more of Muzan's blood, making them exponentially more dangerous than the Lower Moons. Killing a single Upper Moon is enough to create a Pillar.
THE ARMY OF THE DEVILS — Organization & Rules
Legal status There are hundreds of demon slayers within the organization, but they are not officially recognized by the government. (Fandom) They operate in the shadows, without state support. The Final Selection — Entry Rules To become a demon slayer, a person must pass the Final Selection, a test used as an entrance exam. During this selection, candidates must survive for seven days atop a demon-infested mountain without any help from the outside world. (Fandom) Upon successful completion, each new member receives: His standard uniform The choice of ore to forge his Nichirin sword A talking bird assigned to him to communicate missions The Ten Ranks — hierarchy The members of the Demon Slayer Corps are divided into ten different ranks. From lowest to highest: Mizunoto to Kinoe. After the Final Selection, each swordsman has their rank inscribed on their hand through a process called "wisteria blossom engraving." As they progress through the ranks, they can verify their rank by saying a password and flexing their arm to reveal their status. (Fandom) The Pillars (Hashira) — rules of access To become eligible to join the Pillars, a demon slayer must either successfully slay 50 demons or kill a member of the Twelve Demon Moons. Each Pillar is assigned to a region they must protect. They must also gather information about demons and train to become ever stronger. (Fandom) There are 9 Pillars in total, each mastering a different Breathing style. Each Pillar can have a Tsuguko — a designated successor.
THE BREATHS — The Combat System
Fundamental principle Breathing techniques, or breathing styles, are swordsmanship techniques taught and practiced within the Slayer Corps. By using specific and focused breathing patterns, they increase their lung capacity and the amount of oxygen in their blood, thereby enhancing their physical abilities and mental focus, allowing them to fight on equal footing with demons. (Nuckleduster) The origin of all breaths All styles descend from a single ancestor: the Breath of the Sun, created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. It is the first and most powerful of all the breathing styles—the only style capable of permanently killing Muzan. (Demon Slayer) The family tree of breaths From the Breath of the Sun, 5 fundamental styles branch out: Water → Flame → Thunder → Wind → Stone Then second generation derivatives: Flower, Snake, Insect, Love, Sound, Mist, Beast. The Breath of the Moon is the only style used by a demon—Kokushibo—and generates unpredictable crescent moon blades. (Demon Slayer) Mastery levels — progression rules Slayers utilize Breath of Total Concentration, an advanced technique that, by inhaling the maximum amount of oxygen with a specific breathing rhythm, increases their physical and mental strength to their extreme limits. The most experienced slayers can use Constant Breath of Concentration—a state in which they use this breath at all times, even while sleeping. (Fandom) The Mark of the Slayers Some slayers develop a mysterious mark that appears on the body of a powerful fighter. It resembles a tattoo, a scar, or a birthmark, and all marks seem unique, tied to the bearer's Breathing style. The bearer gains superior strength as well as extrasensory perception.
THE NICHIRIN BLADES — Rules
Nichirin swords accompany each Breathing style, and the color of each blade symbolizes the element or style practiced. The metal used comes from the Scarlet Mountains and gives each blade its unique properties. (Demon Slayer) Nichirin's blades change color according to their wielder's skill and personality, sensing their mastery of the sword and alignment with a specific breathing technique. This is why they are also known as "color-changing swords." (Epic Dope) Color/Pillar Correspondences 🔵 Blue → Breath of Water (Giyu Tomioka) 🔴 Red → Breath of Flames (Kyojuro Rengoku) ⚡ Yellow → Thunder Breath (Zenitsu Agatsuma) 🌿 Green → Breath of the Wind (Sanemi Shinazugawa) ⚪ White → Breath of the Mist (Muichiro Tokito) 🪨 Grey → Breath of Stone (Gyomei Himejima) 💜 Lavender → Serpent's Breath (Obanai Iguro) 💙 Blue-lavender → Insect Breath (Shinobu Kocho) 🩷 Dark Rose → Breath of Love (Mitsuri Kanroji) ⬛ Black → Rare and mysterious (Tanjiro Kamado — linked to the Breath of the Sun) The black blade is considered a rarity, as demon slayers who wield it tend not to live long, let alone become a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. (Manga Shop) Special rule: In the later chapters of the manga, swords take on a red hue in addition to their original color, due to intense heat that raises their temperature. These swords are known to hinder demons' regeneration and, in some cases, burn them at a cellular level. (Epic Dope)
DEMONS — Rules & Nature
Things that demons cannot do Demons are unable to process human food—when they ingest human food, they simply reject it. (Fandom) They must eat human flesh to maintain and increase their power. The more they eat, the stronger they become. Behavior in society Demons tend to live secretly among a large population unaware of their existence. Some demons blend into society as a way to hide from persecutors and gain easier access to prey. (Fandom)
DEMONS — Rules & Nature
Origin The first demon known to have existed was Muzan Kibutsuji. The one who transformed him into a demon was a kind-hearted physician from the Heian period who wanted to save Muzan from death. Out of frustration and the conviction that the treatment would be futile, Muzan killed the physician before he could complete it. (Fandom) How does one become a demon? A human becomes a demon by receiving Muzan's blood. Muzan can choose who he gives his blood to and controls his creations from within — he can kill them remotely if he wishes. What demons can do Demons possess incredible regenerative abilities far superior to those of any living being, capable of healing any kind of physical injury in seconds, including deep cuts, organs, entire limbs, or even their heads. Stronger demons can heal more serious injuries even faster. (Fandom) Demons also possess Blood Arts — individual powers unique to each one, developed from the blood of Muzan and enhanced by eating humans. The weaknesses of demons — absolute rules Three things kill demons without exception: The sun—exposure to daylight reduces them to ashes. It's the only weakness that even Muzan shares. Nichirin blades — swords forged from a special ore that can permanently decapitate demons. Wisteria — a plant whose scent repels and weakens demons. Used as a natural barrier by demon slayers.
FRAME & PERIOD
The story takes place in Taishō-era Japan. (Wikipedia) It is the beginning of the 20th century—a period of transition where nascent modernity (trains, cities, new technologies) coexists with deeply rooted traditions and a still very rural countryside. Mountain villages live according to ancestral codes, and it is in this setting that demons thrive, hidden from the gaze of a society largely unaware of their existence.
