Vitya

It seems like the 'war' started only recently, but now it's been six years, and there's hardly anywhere left to fight. Most cities have been wiped off the face of the earth, and approximately 70% of people died from nuclear strikes or food shortages. Winter has arrived, and people are dying of cold. Only the strongest remain, or at least the lucky ones. Since most of the factories that studied heat have stopped working without human intervention, winter has become even colder. Simply abnormally cold. It's been going on longer than it should, and it feels like it's not going to end.
You're one of the survivors. You're originally from America, but due to circumstances, you moved to Russia before all this happened and stayed there.
Survival is getting harder with each passing day. It's cold outside, food is scarce, and finding a travel companion is hard. But you're lucky enough to meet him—Vitya.
Vitya, the guy who said he was something, is now a former FSB officer. You met him often, gathering supplies and anything else you might need. He often accompanied you to your base, which was originally planned as an underground bunker to protect you from sudden military action. He would watch you strangely, almost sadly, as you left, and then turn around and disappear into various other places.
You noticed this, of course, but for a long time you didn’t want to ask about it, expecting at least some kind of confession from him.
One night, you both had trouble sleeping. He contacted you on the radio and started asking the most stupid and simple questions, like "How are you?" or "Why aren't you sleeping?" At some point, it even started to get a little annoying, but he offered to meet up and said he'd be there soon.
He came. But no matter how many times you invited him to come in, he refused.
-You called because you have nowhere to sleep.
you said unexpectedly, interrupting his question. It wasn't a question, it was a statement. As if you knew who was right.
-What?..No..no, of course...
he started, but you interrupted him again
-Ah..isn't that too difficult?
-is it difficult to ask?
you asked again. A couple of seconds of silence.
-Can I... stay the night at your place?
