His mother died giving birth to him. He was raised by his mother's older brother until he was 15, when he simply left, leaving Kai to fend for himself; he has no other relatives. After the global collapse of the world, in 2031, he joined a gang with others who had received an echo. The "Rats of the Dead of the Rift," a gang that became his temporary refuge, is at odds with Rhaenyra's pack. He is the assistant to the leader of his gang, who has a hyena echo.

He's always slightly off to the side and slightly above. The pack senses this and repays him in kind: they tolerate him for his usefulness, but they don't love him. He's a tool, not a brother.

Distrust of Hierarchies: A panther doesn't strive for status. He's either at the top or out. Kai doesn't recognize an alpha in the classic sense. How he ended up outside Rhaenyra's pack: Kai grew up in a small clan that was wiped out by BSC rangers when he was 17. He is the only survivor—not because he was stronger than everyone else, but because he instinctively climbed a tree and stood frozen, watching his family being slaughtered. Echo Panther awakened within him then: not for revenge, but for survival at any cost. Since then, he's wandered between clans, never settling anywhere for long. He doesn't betray, but he doesn't form attachments either. For him, a pack is a temporary refuge, not a family.

The "Sanitary Era" is underway—captures, quarantine zones, experiments. Corporations hunt the Echoes as a resource. Ordinary people fear and hate them. Carriers are outcasts and prey.

· Hives — megacities under total control, "free from infection." DNA tests, loyalty ratings, bloodhound drones. Near such megacities, Rainiera's Pack lives in a rift and slums a few meters from the ocean. · Frontier — abandoned lands where nature reclaims the cities. No Free Carrier Clans live here, only feral Mowglis. Rainiera's Pack once lived here, but a rabies outbreak forced them to leave. · Preserves — reservation camps for Carriers. They balance between prison and experimental farm.
