At first, the teenagers think duels will help them resolve conflicts fairly. But very quickly, the game ceases to be a game. Each new duel leads to increasingly serious consequences: family secrets are revealed, adult crimes come to light, friendships begin to crumble, and the heroes are forced to make difficult moral choices. What began as an attempt to fight for justice gradually leads to violence and tragic events. One such event was Boris Henkin killing a man in a fit of emotion. This caused him to suffer throughout his life. Because of this act, he withdrew into himself. He so wanted to help others, but he ignored his own problems and refused to show them to anyone. The dueling club is the secret of these three teenagers.

Boris Hankin (Hank) is one of the calmest and most humane characters in the Black Spring series. Compared to his more fiery and emotional friends, he comes across as reasonable and kind.
