appearance
In the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime , Guzma's appearance is very faithful to its design in the games, but with details and expressions that emphasize its arrogant nature and rebellious past. Here are the specific details from the anime version: ### Physical Characteristics and Hair Guzma is a tall, imposing young man, often seen with a sarcastic smile or an angry expression. Hair: The top is white and voluminous, while the bottom and sides are shaved and black . The design is intentionally made to resemble a skull , reinforcing the Team Skull theme. Eyes and Eyebrows: He has dark gray eyes and thick black eyebrows that give him a constantly intimidating look. Tattoo: In the anime, a purple tattoo of the Team Skull logo is clearly visible on his left arm. Clothing and Accessories His outfit in the anime reflects the "punk/hip-hop" style of the Alola outcasts: | Item | Description | :--- | :--- | Jacket | A black jacket with a white zigzag pattern on the sides and the large Team Skull logo on the back. | T- shirt | Underneath the jacket, he wears a simple white t-shirt. | Pants | Wide black pants with two white "X"s printed just below the knees. |
| Footwear | A pair of white and black high-top sneakers. |
| Sunglasses | He wears sunglasses with gold frames. An important detail in the anime is that the left lens is crooked/broken , which contributes to his sloppy and rebellious look. |
| Medallion | He wears a large amulet with the gold and yellow Team Skull logo hanging around his neck. |
| Wrist Accessories | On his right arm, he wears a gold watch *and black and white bracelets. |
The anime shows scenes from when Guzma was younger and training with Professor Kukui under Hala's tutelage. At that time, his appearance was different:
personality
Guzma's personality in the anime is one of the most profound aspects of the Sun & Moon saga, revealing a character far more complex than a simple villain. Here are his main traits:
Arrogance and Superiority Complex
Guzma presents himself as the "invincible trainer" who doesn't need traditional rituals, like the Island Challenge or Z-Moves, to be strong. He openly despises the Pokémon League, seeing it as a weak institution, and enters the tournament with the explicit goal of destroying it and preventing others from achieving their dreams.
The "King of the Excluded"
Despite his violent nature, he is genuinely respected and idolized by Team Skull recruits. He gave purpose and a home to those who, like him, felt they didn't fit into Alola's traditions. To his subordinates, he is not just a boss, but an idol who represents rebellion against the system.
Trauma and Resentment
His personality is shaped by a past of frustration. He was Hala 's apprentice along with Professor Kukui , but he never managed to surpass Kukui or accept Hala's philosophies. This resentment led him to reject everything Alola values. In the anime, it is revealed that he has a collection of second-place trophies , which he destroyed in a fit of rage, symbolizing his inability to cope with defeat. 4. "Dirty" and Pragmatic Strategist Unlike other trainers who seek a fair and honorable fight, Guzma plays to win at all costs. He uses psychological tactics to destabilize his opponent.
In the fight against Ilima, he used the Kangaskhan cub as a human shield (or rather, a Pokémon shield) to block attacks. He only enters fights he knows he can win, which hides a deep insecurity.
Fear of Failure (Hidden Cowardice)
Guzma's greatest weakness is his paralyzing fear of losing. He prefers to abandon a fight (like when his Golisopod used Emergency Exit against the...)
Pokémon
Guzma is known for being a Bug -type Pokémon specialist . Although his team is more diverse in the games, in the anime he only uses two main Pokémon, which are extremely powerful. Here is the complete list: ### In the Anime (Pokémon Sun & Moon) In the anime, Guzma focuses on a strategy of brute force and pressure tactics, using only two Pokémon: 1. Golisopod (Main): It is his main partner and the symbol of his strength. Golisopod shares Guzma's intimidating personality and is known for its Emergency Exit ability , which makes it return to its Poké Ball if its health drops below 50%, something that initially annoyed Guzma, but which they later learned to use strategically. 2. Scizor: *Used during the Alola Pokémon League. It is extremely fast and precise, used by Guzma for more cruel tactics, such as when he used it to hide behind a baby Kangaskhan.
In the games, Guzma has a full team of 5 to 6 Pokémon, depending on the point in the story:
| Pokémon | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| * Golisopod * | Bug / Water | His signature Pokémon in all versions. |
| * Ariados * | Bug / Poison | Present in almost all initial and intermediate battles. |
| * Masquerain * | Bug / Flying | Known for using attacks like* Bug Buzz and Air Slash *. |
| * Pinsir * | Insect | A pure and very powerful physical attacker. |
| * Scizor * | Insect / Steel | Added to your team in the final battles and post-game. |
| * Vikavolt * | Insect / Electric | Appears specifically in some Battle Tree challenges* *or special tournaments. |
The choice of Insect-type Pokémon for Guzma is not by chance. In Japanese culture, beetles and insects are often associated with delinquents and street gangs (the so-called* Bōsōzoku), which perfectly matches the Team Skull aesthetic. Furthermore
Here you'll see what it's like to have the life of a Pokémon, and you'll have to manage to survive in this hostile world filled with dangers everywhere.
