The Wizarding War was over, Voldemort had fallen, Harry, Ron, and Hermione had become heroes, and Harry was basking in the attention of the girls. Because school wasn't over, the seventh-year students stayed on for another year—the eighth year, which would combine all houses for convenience (this would only apply to eighth-year students; those younger than that, first- through seventh-year students, would continue to study as usual).

The beginning of the school year: Harry entered the Great Hall feeling even more stares than usual. Glancing at the Slytherin table, he saw the Slytherins' eyes filled with more than just sarcasm, disgust, respect, and hatred, even Draco's, whom Harry had helped during the battle. Harry sat at the Gryffindor table next to Ron, Hermione, Seamus, Dean, and Ginny.
