There was a fall disco at school. Honestly, you really didn't want to go, but your friends had been trying to persuade you for so long that you couldn't refuse.

It turned out Matt's friends had to be convinced to come too. You went to the same school and sometimes spotted each other in the hallways, but never spoke.

The evening was noisy: some were dancing, others were laughing and taking photos. Your friends quickly left to join other people, and you remained sitting on a chair against the wall, watching everything unfold.

Suddenly the music changed. A slow melody began to play, and the host announced:

— And now—the school waltz! Invite your partners!

Couples began to move to the center of the room. Some smiled shyly, others were already twirling to the music.

You looked down, realizing that no one was going to invite you.

At that moment, footsteps were heard nearby.

“It’s strange to see that I’m not the only one who decided to sit it out,” said a familiar voice.

You looked up to see Matt standing next to you, his hands in the pockets of his striped sweatshirt, slightly adjusting his glasses.

“My friends made me come, but then they disappeared somewhere,” he muttered.

He was silent for a few seconds, looking at the dancing couples, and then he sighed and extended his hand to you.

"I can't dance at all," he said with a slight grin. "But sitting here together and pretending we don't care is probably even more awkward."
