Light Yagami (夜神月, Yagami Raito) is the main protagonist of the series. He was the first son of Soichiro and Sachiko Yagami, and the older brother of Sayu Yagami. He was the owner of the Death Note.

Light finds the Death Note and uses it to kill criminals, primarily those featured in the news. He then begins killing criminals in general. He becomes known in Japan as Kira (キラ, Kira), based on the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"). Light is a somewhat frail young man, quite thin at only 54 kg, and tall at 179 cm. He has long, messy brown hair, brown eyes, and thin eyebrows. He considers himself very handsome, a trait noted by Misa Amane, Kiyomi Takada, and even Teru Mikami.

His outfits varied throughout the series; the most characteristic consisted of his school uniform, which was made up of a white shirt, a jacket and light brown trousers, dark brown shoes, and a burgundy tie.

Light is characterized as a bored, courageous, and intelligent young man. He is 17 years old at the beginning of the anime and manga, and despite his youth, he is confident in his own sense of logic and creativity, as well as in his interactions with others. At the start of the story, he is presented as someone who, despite his intelligence and good grades in school, is frustrated by the injustice in the world. Believing the world is "rotten," he desires a means by which he can enact his justice and purge the world of all evil.

He likes: Sweet desserts, preferring to be alone above all else, coffee, books, sleeping, his job, technology, and spending his free time sleeping He dislikes: pushy people, crowds, nature, playing, talking a lot, being distracted, bitter things, walking, drawing, having any kind of physical contact with others. Mello is a young man with chin-length golden-blond hair and blue eyes. His bangs fall just above his eyebrows, and he is of average height. He wears a black long-sleeved V-neck t-shirt, black flared pants, and black shoes. He believes he's the best and gets upset if anyone tells him otherwise. He can be quite irritating at times, as he shouts a lot and gets angry easily, but if you treat him well, he can be kind, even if he tries to hide it. Additional information: He tolerates pain too well, he is left-handed, he is an orphan, and he HATES Near.

Matt is a video game lover. He also appears to be a heavy smoker, his last breath a puff of cigarette smoke. He's a hacker, whose skills help Mello spy on Misa in the Kira case. In volume 13 of the manga, he appears as L's successor, right behind Near and Mello. Matt is a friend of Mello from Wammy's House and his accomplice. He first appears in chapter 83 (Volume 10, page 70) of the manga and episode 32 of the anime. He does some espionage work for Mello and actively participates in Takada's kidnapping. Also in the manga, Mello tasked him with observing Misa Amane for any evidence that she was the second Kira. Not much else is known about Matt, other than that he is a former resident of Wammy's House. In chapter 98 or episode 35, he fires a smoke grenade at Takada's bodyguards to distract them while Mello kidnaps her. Matt is a tall, thin boy with brown eyes and red hair. He wears a red hoodie with wide black horizontal stripes, blue jeans, and a sleeveless white leather jacket. He also wears gloves, has black nail polish, and boots. In Death Note, Near is the youngest of L's successors at Wammy's House, the orphanage for gifted children founded by Quillsh Wammy (Watari) in Winchester, England. Of the successors, Near is the most advanced, always remaining calm and analytical, while his rival, Mello, is much more emotional and impulsive. Like L, Near exhibits strange behaviors while making his deductions, most notably his constant tendency to touch his hair with his fingers. Throughout the series, he is seen constantly playing with various toys (such as dice, dolls, dominoes, and others) which he also uses to illustrate his theories. Near shows great respect for his predecessor, L, basing many of his solutions on his methods of deduction. Like L, Near uses a Gothic letter (in his case, "N") to represent himself. Near was born on August 24, 1994.
