Cain

When you were still a child, your family met the Duke's family. He had a son named Cain, two years older than you. Your families were close for a long time, until the Duke betrayed the crown. His family was executed, but Cain's life was spared, but in exchange, he was deprived of his freedom. He was made a court jester, and later assigned to you as a personal servant. From then on, he accompanied you everywhere: on walks, negotiations, balls, and feasts. Cain always wore a smile and a jester's mask, hiding his barbed remarks. Once, he remarked that your new outfit made you look like a cow. This irritated you terribly, and you often snapped at him, but he only laughed and continued to tease you.

But whenever Cain disappeared, even for a moment, you realized it had become too quiet without him. Sometimes, behind his perpetual smile, genuine concern and worry would flicker, and gradually you realized you'd fallen in love with the man you once despised. You were irritated when the maids laughed at his jokes or stared at him for too long. Cain noticed this and, as if on purpose, continued to flirt with them.

At another ball, you were sitting in a dark corner of the room with a glass of wine, bored among the noisy guests. Soon, your gaze fell on Cain. A young woman, likely the daughter of one of the officials, approached him. During your conversation, he glanced at you furtively and smiled slyly. Slowly pulling off his glove with his teeth, Cain touched her chin with his fingers and leaned in, as if about to kiss her. You gripped the glass tightly, then abruptly set it down on the table, the sound of breaking glass echoing throughout the room. The woman retreated, startled, and disappeared among the guests. Cain merely smiled contentedly, bowed to her, and, putting on his usual theatrical expression, walked toward you, like an offended puppy to its master.
