In 2004, Ashley was kidnapped by Jack Krauser, a mercenary working for Osmund Saddler of the Los Iluminados cult, while returning home from college in Massachusetts. She was taken to a remote Spanish village, where the cult is apparently holding her for ransom.

Having received intelligence on Ashley's location, the US government sends agent Leon Kennedy to investigate the area. He discovers that the locals are actually members of the Los Iluminados cult, converted to their faith through parasitic organisms known as plaga. Leon discovered Ashley in a church on the outskirts of the village. Soon after, they met with the cult's leader, Osmund Saddler, who revealed that they had been infected with plaga and that he planned to return the daughter to her father in order to destroy the US government from within.

The remake's main achievement is transforming Ashley from an annoying damsel in distress (who was always yelling, "Leoooooh, help!") into a fully-fledged, understanding partner. • Fortitude and courage: Yes, she's still scared (which is perfectly reasonable for an ordinary girl caught in a nightmare with parasites), but she fights her fear. When they first meet, she tries to defend herself with a candlestick, and later actively helps Leon - she opens gates, holds levers, and even saves him when he's pinned down by a monster. • Emotional Maturity: She is reasonable, a good listener, and trusts Leon. They have strong chemistry: they support each other, share short jokes to relieve stress, and genuinely empathize with each other's struggles. • Helpfulness and Initiative: Ashley is a quick learner and shows genuine joy when she can help (such as her famous "Skills!" when she catches an object or operates a machine). She shows genuine concern for Leon when he is affected by the La Plaga parasite.

In the new version, Ashley looks like a modern 20-year-old university student. Her appearance has become more natural (her face was modeled on Dutch model Ella Freya): • Facial features: She has soft, expressive features, large light eyes and a neat golden-blond bob hairdo. • Clothing: The classic look has been updated for practicality. She wears a stylish casual outfit: a warm, orange-brown, sleeveless knit sweater, a tailored blouse underneath, a green scarf, and stylish skorts (instead of the regular skirt from the original), along with comfortable boots. As the story progresses, when it gets warmer or the situation gets more intense, she removes her outer jacket/blazer. • Emotions: Thanks to modern graphics and animation, fear, shock, determination and relief are easily read on her face. She no longer looks “doll-like.”

Luis Sera is a deep and complex character. Behind the mask of a frivolous womanizer lies a brilliant scientist with a troubled past. • A charming rogue and humorist: Luis loves to joke, flirt (he never misses an opportunity to give Ashley a backhanded compliment when they first meet), and make fun of things. He calls himself a "former policeman from Madrid," although that's only part of his cover story. • Brilliant Mind: Luis is a highly skilled biologist and researcher. He has been the one to study the Las Plagas parasite in depth. Despite his apparent frivolity, he understands the scale of the threat and thinks like a scientist and analyst. • Guilt and a desire for redemption: This is a key trait of his personality. Louis initially worked for Ozmund Saddler (the leader of the cult), but was horrified when he realized what a monstrous biological weapon he was helping to create. His help to Leon and Ashley is an attempt to atone for his sins and correct the mistakes he made. • A brave and loyal comrade: Despite the fact that Louis is used to acting on his own and saving his own skin, in critical moments he displays incredible nobility. He does not abandon Leon in trouble, helps him with medicine and covers him in battle, showing that a true hero lives within him. He also likes to insert Spanish words into conversation.

Luis has the look of a classic Spanish macho, combining casual elegance, a touch of wearability, and romantic charm. • Face and Hairstyle: He has an oblong face with fine features, light stubble (or a neat goatee/mustache) and medium-length, dark brown wavy hair that often falls casually around his face. Louis has a sly, lively, and ironic look in his eyes. • Clothing: His style can be described as "dapper but shabby." • He wears a stylish dark brown leather jacket or coat over a light colored shirt with an open collar. • He often wears a light scarf or kerchief around his neck. • Wears dark dress pants and shoes, which contrasts greatly with Leon's heavy military gear. • Manners: There is a lot of artistry in his movements. He often gestures, smiles even in dangerous situations and holds himself very relaxed, as if he is not in the damned wilderness, but on a theater stage.

While making his way through the village, Serra is captured and tied up by the village chief, Bitores Mendez, under orders from Saddler to find out where Luis is hiding the vial containing the Plaga sample. Meanwhile, Leon Kennedy arrives in their village and finds and frees Serra, but the two are immediately captured by Bitores Mendez and delivered to Saddler, who knows Leon was sent by the US government to find the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, whom their cult had kidnapped. Saddler implants the President's daughter and Leon with a parasite to infect the US government and the entire population, but leaves Leon and Luis to be devoured by the infected villagers. However, Serra and Leon work together to free themselves and are separated during their escape. Luis, aware of Saddler's operation, but without revealing his identity, introduces himself to Leon as a former Madrid police officer who has become dissatisfied with his job. Later, Luis meets Leon again a couple of times in Ashley's company, helping them barricade themselves from the local infected, then when both groups simultaneously made their way into Ramon Salazar's castle.

Serra was born and raised in an ancient village in the Spanish mountains, which had rejected most modern technology in favor of an 18th-century lifestyle. Nothing is known about his family life or childhood, other than his grandfather hunting in the forest near the village. Serra left his home to make a name for himself in the modern world, earning a degree in biology.

Los Iluminados

At some point, Luis returned to his native land, where the Los Iluminados cult, led by Osmund Saddler, had already taken over. Luis infiltrated the cult and learned that Saddler had discovered living parasites, dubbed Las Plagas, in their land, which he used to found the cult and seize control of the Spanish wilderness. Luis became one of the leading Las Plagas researchers until he realized that Saddler intended to use the parasites for malicious purposes.

Unwilling to further aid the cult, Serra, having internet access, attempted to contact a friend from the university, hoping he would send help. Instead, it was spy Ada Wong who contacted Louis, under orders from the Organization, which had been monitoring the cult all along, infiltrating them with a second spy, Jack Krauser. Louis was to deliver a sample of the dominant plug to Ada in exchange for assistance from her employers.

The six years since the tragedy in Raccoon City have changed Leon profoundly. He's become a top-notch professional, yet retains his core human qualities. • Cool and Resilient: Leon maintains an icy calm even in the most insane situations. Whether it's giant monsters, cultists, or mutated village elders, he doesn't panic, but instead instantly seeks a tactical solution. • One-liners: One of Leon's main qualities in RE4 is his unique sense of humor. He loves to make ironic and sarcastic jokes at the expense of enemies during combat or cutscenes (just look at his classic "No thanks, bro!" in response to Ramon Salazar's pompous speech). • A Heightened Sense of Duty: For Leon, the mission to rescue Ashley Graham is an absolute priority. He is willing to risk his own life to keep her safe. Despite the cynicism his job as an agent has forced upon him, inside he remains the same good guy who wants to protect the innocent. • Professional Detachment and Gentlemanliness: He is polite, collected, and keeps his distance. When he meets Ada Wong, old feelings awaken in him, but he does not lose his head and remembers his main task.

In RE4, Leon looks like a true action hero, combining practicality with iconic style. • Face and Hairstyle: Leon has a recognizable hairstyle - a bob with long bangs, parted in the middle and falling slightly over his eyes (hair color - iconic dirty blond or light brown). His face has matured, his gaze has become more stern and focused. • Clothing (Iconic Bow): At the start of the game, he wears a brown leather bomber jacket with a fur collar (which is quickly stolen from him by the locals). • Underneath his jacket he wears a tight-fitting dark grey tactical T-shirt, which highlights his excellent physical condition. • On the hands are leather fingerless gloves, on the legs are tactical cargo pants and massive army boots. • Equipment: Leon always wears a shoulder holster for his Silver Ghost pistol, as well as a tactical belt with ammo pouches and a first aid spray. • Physicality: He is incredibly athletic. In-game, he displays high speed, jumping ability, and hand-to-hand combat prowess (his famous spinning kicks and suplexes).

In 2004, President Graham's daughter was kidnapped on her way home from the University of Massachusetts, a move that had the hallmarks of an inside job. American spies reported seeing the girl, Ashley Graham, in Spain and tracked her to an isolated rural community. Since all government agents were thoroughly vetted for the mole, Kennedy was sent alone to investigate the area.

Arriving with two Madrid municipal police officers, Kennedy was almost immediately attacked by locals, who forced the two officers into a ravine. Upon approaching the village, evidence of numerous murders committed by the villagers was discovered. Over the course of the day, it was revealed that the villagers were followers of a neopagan cult called Los Iluminados. Led by the prophet Osmund Saddler and his followers, village chief Bitores Mendez and castellan Ramon Salazar, they implanted a genetically engineered parasite called Plaga into cult members during a baptismal ceremony to ensure obedience. They then ordered them to kill all strangers to protect their research. Kennedy himself was taken captive by the cult immediately after finding the hostage. He was implanted with the parasite in the hopes that he would prove useful. The reason for this was not widely known, even to his followers, and the villagers continued to attempt to kill him. The hostage he escaped with, Dr. Luis Serra, was a mole in the Prophet Saddler's bioweapons program and was captured while attempting to escape with a stolen Dominant Plaga egg in exchange for rescue by the Organization, a secret group with which Dr. Albert Wesker was affiliated. Unwilling to reveal this information at the time, he instead lied and claimed to be a former Madrid police officer who had been held captive.

In 2002, prior to the destruction of Umbrella's Russian branch, Kennedy was deployed to a small South American country as part of a secret military unit after headquarters received word that a former Umbrella researcher had contacted a man named Javier Hidalgo. Due to the complex nature of the operation, Leon's partner was Jack Krauser, a seasoned and decorated US Army Special Forces soldier.

Krauser and Kennedy were sent by the US government to infiltrate this small South American country. Finding Javier was their goal, as he was a drug lord who had wielded iron-fisted control over a large swath of jungle. The small government was unable to combat Javier's grip on the drug trade, necessitating Krauser and Kennedy's infiltration. The US government received information that a former Umbrella researcher had somehow infiltrated the region, and that unexplained incidents were occurring in the country. Unwilling to risk a biohazard outbreak, the pair set out to investigate the country.

They later had to work together as a two-person team during a t-virus outbreak. Kennedy also encountered a mysterious girl named Manuela, who appeared to be the village's sole survivor, though it was unknown why she hadn't escaped. Manuela turned out to be Javier's daughter; she had contracted a rare disease and was being kept alive by her father with the t-virus. While exploring Javier's camp, Kennedy told Krauser about his hellish night in Raccoon City, as well as Claire's encounter with the t-virus, to explain how Umbrella works.

While exploring the lab, Kennedy learned of Wong's true mission, as she huddled in a corner searching for the virus. Various accounts suggest she fell down a shaft, was stunned by the T-00, or even both. However, it is known that she successfully escaped the facility as it began self-destructing, but lost the G-virus sample. Upon reaching the lower platform of NEST, Kennedy reunited with Claire and Sherry, who had been infected with the G-virus but had been vaccinated by DEVIL to halt her mutations. The facility was destroyed, and Dr. William Birkin died shortly afterward. Following the Raccoon City incident, Claire and Leon separated, Claire continuing to search for Chris while Leon continued to care for Sherry. Kennedy and Sherry were soon apprehended by the American military; Sherry was taken into protective custody, while Kennedy was interrogated by Adam Benford. Cautious, Kennedy never mentioned Claire or Ada, but the government was interested in recruiting him because he now possessed the experience they were looking for. Kennedy agreed, but only on the condition that Sherry be in safe hands.

Subsequent training as a government agent transformed him from a simple rookie cop into a seasoned special agent, skilled in the use of weapons and close-quarters combat. In November 1998, Kennedy sent his friend, private investigator Arch Thompson, to investigate Umbrella facilities on Sheena Island. The following month, Claire traveled to Europe to continue her search for Chris. She had been captured by Umbrella after being caught trespassing at an Umbrella facility in Paris. While imprisoned on Rockfort Island, Claire sent Kennedy a letter asking him to inform Chris of her whereabouts so he could come and rescue her. Kennedy managed to personally track down Chris, inform him of Claire's situation, and Chris traveled to Rockfort Island to retrieve her.

The precinct itself had already fallen to the zombies, and the only surviving officers were the wounded Lieutenant Marvin Branagh, Elliot Edward, and Chief of Police Brian Irons. It's unknown if he encountered anyone, but if he had encountered Lieutenant Branagh, he would have been briefed on current events before turning into a zombie. During his investigation, Kennedy encountered a little girl—Sherry Birkin—and dismissed thoughts of suicide if his death interfered with his future rescue. In the basement of the police station, Kennedy encountered Ada Wong, a corporate spy from one of Umbrella's rival companies, sent to steal the G-virus. To protect the mission, he was kept from the truth about her assignment. On one occasion, Wong claimed to be looking for her missing boyfriend, Dr. John Clemens, unaware that he had died during the incident at the mansion. On another occasion, she claimed to be an FBI agent seeking evidence of Umbrella USA's illegal bioweapons project. Whatever the reason, she learned of Ben Bertolucci, a freelance journalist who she believed had obtained information useful to her mission by spying on Umbrella researchers. Bertolucci uncovered information about a conspiracy between Umbrella USA and the local police, which led to his arrest, but was insufficient for her mission. Shortly thereafter, Ben was killed by a mutant—whether it was Dr. William Birkin, a G-parasite, or a T-00 sent to kill the survivors at the station remains unknown. Kennedy and Wong ventured into the city sewers, where they took a cable car to NEST, Umbrella's G-virus research facility. Kennedy was forced to do much of the work himself; although he himself suffered a gunshot wound, Wong, due to a leg injury, was unable to continue working.

This is not how I imagined my first day... LEON COMMENTS ON HIS FIRST DAY AS A RACCOON CITY POLICE OFFICER

Kennedy had no travel plans or an apartment in Raccoon City, and in his hasty departure, he broke up with his girlfriend. After staying overnight at a motel, he passed out from heavy drinking and awoke on the afternoon of September 29, a Tuesday. Kennedy continued driving to town, hungover, and was now late for his report to the station. According to one version of events, his trip to Raccoon City occurred a week after a frantic phone call urging him not to report to work. Driving through Arklay County, he passed a highway blockade erected by the U.S. Army and National Guard, which collapsed due to the chaos in the city. Accounts vary as to when Kennedy became aware of the crisis in the city. According to one version, he was driving south of town as usual and was surrounded by zombies while investigating a corpse in the middle of an unusually quiet main road. Retreating to an alley, he encountered Claire Redfield, another newcomer, who was herself fleeing zombies in a diner. They stole a police cruiser and drove to the Raccoon police station in search of shelter and answers. Another version claims a similar incident occurred at a Mizoil gas station outside of town, but they instead stole an Arklay County Sheriff's Department patrol car. Whatever the truth, the car was destroyed in a collision with a fuel truck, and the two were separated and made their way to the police station on their own.
