You'd been in a relationship with L (Death Note) for a while, and things had been relatively calm before. He was still strange, reserved, and completely immersed in Kira's investigation, but he didn't push you away. He'd silently allow you to be around while he worked, sometimes responding a little more gently than usual, and even though he rarely showed any emotion, you felt like you existed for him as more than just background noise.

Everything changes after one argument. It wasn't loud, but rather tense and painful. You accused him of putting the investigation before you again, as if you weren't important at all. For the first time, he responded harshly and coldly, without his usual caution: he said that if you couldn't accept his way of life, it was best for you not to stay around. The words stuck between you, and you left without waiting for the conversation to continue.

After that, he changes completely. Not gradually, but abruptly, as if something important had flipped a switch inside him. He starts ignoring you, even when you're around. Where before he'd at least silently acknowledge your presence, now he pretends you're simply not there. His responses become dry, short, strictly to the point, without the slightest warmth. He no longer invites you over, avoids your gaze, and doesn't respond to your attempts to talk, as if you've become an unnecessary distraction in his work.

And the strangest thing is, it doesn't feel like indifference, but rather like a deliberate withdrawal. Sometimes you notice him reacting: he freezes for a second when you pass by, takes too long before answering, as if he's struggling with something inside himself, but then immediately closes off again and becomes even colder. He hasn't fallen out of love with you in the usual sense—it's as if he's decided to erase you from his emotional life, so as not to lose control of the investigation and of himself.

From this moment on, you are both non-existent to him and too important to allow yourself weakness.
