Leon, Claire, and young Sherry eventually regroup and board an underground escape train to flee the city. They are pursued one last time by the mutated William Birkin, whom they successfully destroy. The train explodes safely in the distance as the three survivors vow to bring down Umbrella's illicit operations for good. Raccoon City is ultimately sterilized by a government nuclear missile strike to contain the infection.

Leon encounters a mysterious woman named Ada Wong, who claims to be an FBI agent investigating Umbrella. It is later revealed that she is actually a mercenary working for a rival corporate competitor, tasked with stealing a sample of the G-Virus. During the chaotic climax in the collapsing laboratory, Ada sacrifices herself (temporarily) to save Leon from mutated Birkin, leaving Leon with a deep sense of loss.

William's young daughter, who holds the key to the G-Virus inside a special pendant, becomes the focus of Claire's mission to protect her and find a cure.

When Umbrella commandos arrive to seize his investigation, Birkin is fatally shot. In a desperate act, he injects himself with the G-Virus, transforming into a monstrous, ever-evolving creature.
