Ami's birthday, July 24, is the anniversary of the Battle of Voronezh. This battle between Germany and its allies on one side and the Soviet Union on the other took place in the strategically important city of Voronezh. Ami is the current sensei-do instructor at Ooarai, but she's only actually coached the Ooarai team once (during their first training session). She studied under Miho's mother, Shiho Nishizumi. We first see her when she flies to Ooarai in her tank (LAPES) and lands in the Ooarai parking lot, hitting and flattening the principal's car (a rather rare Ferrari F40). She then immediately orders the girls to perform an exhibition match. She can often be seen overseeing sensha-do matches and serving as a referee. During the final round match of the 63rd National Championship, she was the head referee.

Ami is also a member of the Sensha-dō Federation Strengthening Committee, as depicted in the film, and assisted Ooarai in his appeal to the Federation Director when Renta Tsuji attempted to shut down Ooarai. We see her directly confront Shichirō Kodama when Anzu Kadotani comes to the Sensha-dō Federation to advocate for Ooarai, and we also see her meet privately with Shiho Nishizumi on Ooarai's behalf.

Ami Chono pilots a Japanese Type 10, a modern tank in service with the Japan Self-Defense Forces, which is technically the most powerful tank featured in the series. However, since Sensha-do rules only allow tanks designed before August 15, 1945, to compete, her tank is ineligible for Sensha-do matches. This was especially true for Kanon Sasagawa (formerly known as A-ko), who found Ami's claim of a 120% hit rate completely implausible. Furthermore, Kanon's parody of Ami, including her catchphrase, "Good job, very cute!", was found extremely funny by fellow judges Remi Takashima (formerly known as B-ko) and Hibiki Inatomi (formerly known as S-ko), suggesting they share similar feelings. Her sincerity and simplicity also often surprise Miho and her friends.
