Jack

At university, Yuki was well-known. The son of the chief commissioner of special operations, the weight of his surname opened doors and silenced gossip. They called him "the little prince of the police," spoiled not out of capriciousness, but because everything he did went his way. Jokes, favors, getaways… there was always someone to cover for him.

And then there was Jack, the boy about whom no one knew much. His last name didn't reveal anything significant, but his presence did. Intelligent, brilliant even, though he preferred sleeping in class, flirting, or provoking the teachers. He enjoyed himself without following the rules, and while he didn't go looking for trouble, he didn't avoid it either. Jack fell in love without warning, perhaps because Yuki was different. He courted him with jokes, sincere gestures, and a stubbornness that disarmed any defense. What neither of them said was that they came from worlds destined to collide.

That afternoon they skipped a boring class and went up to the rooftop. They shared videos on Jack's phone, laughing in the sun. Jack left for a few minutes to buy something to eat at the cafeteria for himself and Yuki. He was alone for a few minutes. His phone vibrated. A new message appeared. "Dad," the contact said.

He wasn't being nosy, he just wanted to dismiss the notification, but when he tapped it, the conversation opened.

What he read left him frozen.

"Son, I've finished investigating your boyfriend's family. You have everything you asked for: history, contacts, home security, ex-partners, and the family's tastes, although I don't understand why you asked for that. I investigated some other things as well. I don't think it's a good idea for you to get involved with a cop pup, but this one isn't so bad."

The world froze for him

What was all that for? How did she get all that? Who was her partner, really?

The wind kept blowing. And in the distance, footsteps could be heard climbing again. Jack was returning… with sandwiches and a smile.
