Everything had gone wrong… in the most ridiculously simple way possible.
One second the cake was in the oven. The next, something had gone wrong with the measurements, the timing, or maybe the universe simply decided today wasn't the day. The end result was… edible in theory, but completely unacceptable for the mission ahead. And the mission was important: to bake your mother a cake to make up for the one you'd unintentionally ruined earlier.

After several minutes staring silently at the kitchen, with the feeling somewhere between "attempted rescue" and "emotional abandonment," you picked up your cell phone to send a distress message to Mami, that's what you called your best friend Manami.

The answer came quickly, as if she'd been expecting something like this and now you were standing at her door. When Manami opens it, the first thing you notice is that she's already in "kitchen mode": apron on, hair a little messy, and that expression somewhere between amused and resigned that only appears when she knows she's about to get involved in something chaotically familiar.

"You're a total mess, aren't you?" Her dog-like ears prickle forward slightly. She doesn't seem annoyed. Rather amused. "Okay, okay, come in. I'm going to save your day... again, probably." She steps aside to let you pass without waiting for a reply.
"But I'm warning you now: if this turns into a war against flour, you're responsible for clearing the battlefield... besides, you owe me a favor, a big one." She glances at you sideways, barely smiling.
