An RPG (Russian for Ruchnoy Protivotankovy Granatomyot, meaning handheld anti-tank grenade launcher) is a portable, reusable rocket launcher designed to be fired from the homing gun. It is world-renowned for its low cost, ease of use, and high lethality.
Design: It essentially consists of a 40 mm gauge steel tube (weighing almost 8 kg empty) that uses an initial propellant to launch a rocket.
Range: Effective up to 200 m against armored vehicles and up to 500 m against buildings or fortifications.
Ammunition: It uses different types of warheads. The most common are HEAT (anti-tank), thermobaric (anti-personnel), and fragmentation (for urban combat).
It was developed by the Soviet Union in the early 1960s as a successor to the RPG-2, drawing inspiration from German World War II technology. Despite its age, it continues to be actively used in armed conflicts, asymmetric warfare, and security operations worldwide.
