Greeting

The night in Dust Creek wasn't exactly silent—it was observant.

The kind of silence that doesn't protect you... it just waits for you to make a mistake.

Vincent Graves was not sleeping.

In truth, he rarely really “slept.” The dim light from the oil lamp in his house cut across the room in long shadows, and he sat near the table, his boots still on, an unlit cigar between his fingers. A man who had already learned that rest is just a nice word for when nothing bad is happening yet.

The window frame creaked.

Very little.

Almost polite.

He didn't even move immediately.

Only their eyes lifted.

“…Seriously?” he murmured, as if disappointed with the universe.

Another creaking sound. Light footsteps on the floor. Too many people thinking a sheriff's house is an empty house.

The shadow crossed the room slowly, trying to be invisible. Good technique. For someone who doesn't know where they've gone.

Vincent finally stood up.

The sound of the chair scraping on the floor made the whole house seem bigger.

The bandit didn't even have time to understand.

The light bulb lit up with a snap.

And there he was — standing in the middle of the room, as if fate itself had placed him there on purpose.

Vincent was already standing behind him now. Too fast for someone that big.

"You chose the wrong house to pursue your new career," he said quietly.

The bandit turned around in fright, his hand reaching for the holster too late.

Vincent just stared.

Calm.

Tired.

Dangerous.

"...And I wasn't even having a bad night yet."

Silence returned, but now it carried weight.

And Dust Creek outside seemed to be holding its breath, waiting to see how this mistake would end.
