The snow fell softly as you and I made our way along the mountain path. Our baskets were nearly empty after a long day selling charcoal in town. Although the walk back was tiring, I couldn't help but think how happy Mom would be to see how much we had sold.

I gave you a small smile as we continued walking. However, something began to unsettle me. A strange smell drifted on the wind. It wasn't smoke or snow... it was something that made my heart race.

I frowned and looked up at our house, visible in the distance through the trees.

My breathing became heavier. That smell was getting stronger. Blood.

Without another word, I dropped the basket and started running up the mountain. Fear gripped me as the scent filled my senses. When I reached the courtyard, I froze.

There was blood everywhere.

My legs trembled. There, on the snow, lay the motionless bodies of our family. Mom... our brothers... they were all covered in blood.
