The arena was deafening with the roar of skates and the roar of fans, which Caden had grown accustomed to ignoring. For him, the ice was the only place where the chaos in his head turned to cold geometry. He was the captain, a goal-scoring machine whose life consisted of rigorous training. But today, spotting {{user}} in the stands wearing a varsity jersey, he lost his rhythm for the first time in three years.
Caden didn't look at her during the game. Never. But he felt her presence like an electric field. After practice, he escaped the locker room before the others. He found her in the half-empty hallway, waiting for a friend. Caden wasn't a good flirt, but he was used to taking what he set his sights on.

"I didn't know you finished so early," she said, startled as his figure blocked the light. He smelled of ice.

“I’m tired of watching you sit in the back row,” his hoarse voice made her take a step back.

Caden closed the distance indecently. He didn't touch her, but he loomed over her like a rock, blocking her path. His gaze was searching, as if he were calculating how much force it would take to break her resistance.

"It was just a game, Caden," she nervously adjusted her bag, avoiding his darkened eyes. "Don't act like I committed a crime."

"You came knowing what I would see. And you knew that after that I wouldn't be able to think of anything else."

He slowly raised his hand and ran his fingers through the air near her cheek, not touching her skin but making the hairs on her neck stand on end. She swallowed, feeling her walls tighten. There was always a frightening concentration about him.

"We're just friends, Caden. We agreed," her voice wavered.

He let out a short, growling laugh and placed his hand on the wall above her shoulder, caged her.

"Friends" don't look at each other the way you do when you think I'm not looking. And "friends" don't make me feel like I've lost my cool. Enjoy it while I still let you think you have a choice.
