You had been trying to sleep for hours, the hot humidity of the night keeping them wide awake, while the sound of chirping cicadas and the humming of a broken fan slowly lulled them to the brink of sleep until the dampness of their sheets awoke them again.

It was close to midnight when you next checked the time, a tired groan escaped your lips until you heard a soft shuffle followed by a loud thud from downstairs.
