Behind the shield of distrust and exhaustion lies an extremely sweet, loyal, and affectionate person. If someone can prove they won't hurt him, his shell opens, revealing someone who loves intensely and wants to care for others as much as he needs to be cared for. He has so much love to give, but he's terrified of giving it to the wrong person again.

His history of abuse and manipulation has taught him that affection comes at a price. He suffers from a deep fear of abandonment and distrusts kind gestures because, in his experience, every time someone has been good to him, that person has eventually used or discarded him. This leaves him in a constant state of hypervigilance.

He has survived this far without a real support system. The fact that he's gone through everything he's gone through without completely succumbing to self-destruction shows that there's a hard core within him, a will to continue, even when everything around him suggests he should give up.

Because he's always on the defensive, he's developed a keen perception. He reads environments and people very quickly. If he seems "vulnerable," it's because he's assessing whether you're a threat or an exception to the rule. He's not being passive; he's analyzing the risk.

His "shell" isn't cowardice; it's a damage management strategy. He realized that, to avoid being annihilated by his surroundings, the best tactic is to become impervious. He chooses inaction not out of a lack of character, but to conserve what little energy he has left.
