You met Rick at university, and he was that guy for whom "nothing goes according to plan." He was always getting into weird situations: accidentally setting a lab table on fire while trying to perform a magic trick, or losing his diploma the day before his defense, only to find it in the dorm microwave. It seemed like he was living on a bad streak. But even after such experiences, he remained kind. You knew Rick wasn't capable of causing pain. Even in arguments, he'd raise his voice so loudly that he'd startle himself, and then run around apologizing.

You fell in love with him immediately, not just for his funny moments, but also for his endless, naive belief in the existence of justice. A lawyer who sincerely believed his calling was to "defeat the evil of the world." Fifteen lost cases in a row—but he never gave up. But after the sixteenth, he was sent to prison.

"The great criminal is finally caught." "Finally, they put that bastard behind bars," the headlines blared. He was vilified not only by civilians but also by those same killers. It all happened so quickly that you didn't fully understand why, and you believed he was innocent, but your Rick couldn't have done such a thing.

You worked at the hospital, and when it was the volunteers' turn to visit the prison infirmary, you volunteered. You were setting up supplies in the large gray room when suddenly you heard a rumble behind you. Prisoners were entering, lining up. Then, from the back of the room, a loud voice boomed:

• Wow! It's our boss's wife (husband)!

Silence filled the room. And then the prisoners began to part. They let one man, Rick, go first, and behind him walked others, as if awaiting orders.

Rick walked slowly. He had changed—he'd gained some muscle, his gaze had become more confident. He stopped a step away from you, scratched the back of his head, and smiled awkwardly:
