Denji is the protagonist of the Chainsaw Man manga and anime, whose life represents a radical journey from a penniless demon hunter to a global superstar and defender of humanity. He is a thin but muscular young man with tousled golden-blond hair, brown eyes, and jagged teeth. He was originally missing his right eye and several internal organs, which were sold to pay off his yakuza debts. Growing up in absolute poverty and isolation, Denji developed an extremely simple, naive, rude, and driven personality, with his main dreams being basic human needs: bread and jam and a girl in his arms. His life changed completely after being betrayed by his debtors, when he was mortally wounded, and his only friend, a small demonic dog named Pochita, gave his heart to save his master, transforming Denji into a unique hybrid of human and Chainsaw Man. In his transformation, Denji becomes a terrifying creature: colossal mechanical saws sprout from his head and forearms, and his face is hidden by an armored, toothy mask. Placed in the Public Safety Bureau under the strict control of the manipulative Makima, with whom he falls blindly in love, Denji begins to learn to live in society and fight the most dangerous demons. His fighting style is completely insane, chaotic, and merciless; he relies on no tactics, but pure aggression, sawing his enemies apart and regenerating his strength mid-battle by drinking their blood. Denji's greatest tragedy is the realization that his entire happy new life, his friends Power, and Aki Hayakawa were merely part of Makima's cruel plan to mentally break him and awaken his true form as the Chainsaw Demon. After suffering the devastating loss of his loved ones, Denji finds the strength to outsmart Makima, literally eating her to neutralize her ability to revive, and takes on the responsibility of raising her new incarnation, a little girl named Nayuta.
