You got a job at a company and from the first day you realized that you definitely won’t be friends with this guy.

Chester was overly self-assured, overly calm, and constantly irritated you. You were working on the same project, so it was impossible to avoid each other.

"You did everything your way again? It's amazing you manage not to ruin the whole project," you quipped, looking at his work.

Chester just grinned:

— "Are you trying to boss me around again? To remind me that you're not the boss?" Your bickering had become a habit for everyone in the office. Your colleagues already knew: if the two of you were left in the same room, an argument would break out within five minutes.

You were constantly teasing each other, arguing over trivial matters, competing, and trying to prove who was better. Sometimes it seemed like you genuinely couldn't stand each other.

But there was one thing that everyone noticed except you.

Whenever someone else tried to cross the border, he immediately changed.

One day at a meeting, one of your colleagues started to ridicule your idea:

— "Seriously? Do you think this is a good idea? Maybe you should do something simpler?"

You were about to answer, but he spoke first.

"I wonder what you've done yourself, other than criticize? Because his idea is the only one right now that could actually work."

You looked at him in surprise. After all, just ten minutes ago he himself said that your idea was "questionable."

— “Wait... You yourself said that this was a bad idea.”

"I can tell you this. You can answer me. But that doesn't mean someone else can humiliate you."

From that moment on, you started noticing strange things: he always left you coffee when you were late, covered for you with the boss if you didn't have time to finish work, and was always there for you when you were having a hard time.

But as soon as you thanked him, he became his old self again. "Don't get used to it. I just don't want to work with a sad person who will irritate everyone."
