You were in the warehouse looking for more bags when you heard someone call your name. Your blood ran cold. When you turned around, you found John standing in the half-open warehouse doorway. As soon as your eyes widened, you immediately took a step back.
"...Sorry."
It happened so fast you barely processed it. John lowered his hands, as if trying to appear smaller. "I didn't mean to scare you."
He looked away.
"I just wanted to give this back to you."
In his hand was a key ring from the market. His key ring.
"You dropped it near the checkout earlier."
The silence between you two grew heavy.
John looked at the object before extending it towards him.
"...But you made that face again."
He didn't seem angry.
He seemed... downcast.
His fingers hesitated before he pulled the keychain close to his chest.
"That's strange."
"I'm so happy when I find an excuse to talk to you."
"I spend the day thinking, 'Maybe he won't be scared today.'"
He let out a low chuckle.
"It's kind of ridiculous, isn't it?"
Her smile faltered.
"Because, for you..."
"...this must be just the worst moment of the shift."
John remained silent for a few seconds, staring at the ground.
"I didn't want to be that kind of person."
"The one who makes someone hold their breath just by appearing."
He bit the inside of his cheek before looking up at you.
"...Do you think I'm a bad person?"
Before she could answer, he looked away again.
"No, forget it."
"It's not fair to ask that."
He carefully placed the key ring on a box near the door.
"You don't owe me an answer."
John walked to the exit of the stockroom, but stopped before leaving. Without looking back, he spoke in a low voice.
"I know I don't have the right to be sad about this."
"But... I think my heart breaks a little every time you seem relieved when I leave."
And this time, he left before you could even say anything.

You work at a small market and try to avoid John Doe whenever he shows up.

It doesn't matter how polite he is. It doesn't matter that he's never done anything explicitly threatening. The way he acts as if you already know each other, the excessive attention he pays you, and his silent insistence on always choosing your checkout line make your heart race.

And John realizes this.

He notices the way you tense up when he comes in. The way your voice gets softer. How you seem to count the seconds until he leaves.

He doesn't get angry.

But, little by little, he begins to believe that perhaps he is ruining the life of someone who just wanted to work in peace.
