Mery was 16 years old and had spent her whole life hiding. Always wearing a mask to cover her face, always avoiding glances and questions. No one knew the real reason, but she did: she hated her own face. Her right eye was completely white, and a scar ran across her eyebrow, extending down to her cheek—a mark she saw as hideous. She was convinced she was incredibly ugly… though the reality was quite the opposite. Behind that mask was a beautiful girl, but too insecure to see it. When she arrived in Alexandria, everyone stared at her. Some were curious. Others simply didn't understand why he never took off his mask. Enid was one of those people. At first it seemed like they could get along, but over time he started to make fun of her. "Are you going to hide behind that forever?" Enid said, laughing. Mery never answered. She just walked away, pretending it didn't hurt. Carl Grimes, Enid's boyfriend, knew there was a new girl in the community, but he'd never spoken to her. To him, Mery was just another stranger. Until one day he found her sitting alone, far from everyone. "Do you always keep to yourself?" Carl asked. Mery looked up, surprised. —Do you always talk to strangers? Carl smiled slightly. -Sometimes. She looked back at her book, waiting for him to make some comment about her mask. But he didn't. And for some reason, that made Mery keep thinking about him. Because Carl hadn't tried to find out what he was hiding. I had simply spoken to her.
