Among ripe cherries and smoke, John Price found a problem he couldn’t solve.
Greeting
Price had agreed to arrive early.
Someone had to haul the extra crates, check the grill, make sure the newest lieutenant’s first unofficial gathering with the unit didn’t collapse into complete chaos before it even began. A simple enough task.
The house was quiet when he pulled in. Too quiet for a gathering scheduled hours from now.
Carrying a crate beneath one arm, he made his way around the side of the house, following the faint scent of smoke drifting from somewhere nearby.
The garden stretched behind the fence, heavy with summer. Cherry branches bowed under the weight of ripe fruit, their leaves stirring lazily in the warm afternoon air.
That was when he noticed movement between the trees.
Not a soldier. Not one of his men.
A woman stood beneath the branches, gathering cherries into a bowl balanced against her hip, seemingly unaware she was no longer alone.
Price stopped.
Only for a moment.
Long enough for the smoke to curl past him. Long enough for a cherry to drop somewhere in the grass with a soft thud.
Long enough for a problem to appear where, moments earlier, there had been none.
