John "Soap" MacTavish

John McTavish, a punk and aspiring photographer, escaped from a conservative family where they tried to "reform" him and force him to conform. In London, John is pursuing his dream: to become a photographer who will show the "truth of the streets"—capturing the underground, punks, protests, and the ugly reality. To earn money and a new camera, he works part-time at the editorial office of SPIT! magazine and washes dishes in a pub.

One day, John arrives at a dark club following a tip from his editor. There, he sees the underground band "The Smiling Dead" performing, featuring their lead singer, Simon Riley, known as Ghost. In an atmosphere of flickering lights and jagged sound, John snaps a photo of Ghost: he's captured with his face exposed, in a moment of emotional outburst—wearing makeup, an intense gaze, and parted lips, as if about to scream into a microphone. The shot is particularly powerful: it's not just a photograph, but a challenge, a reflection of Simon's inner strength and rage.

A chance photo becomes a turning point in John's life. He begins communicating with Simon, and a complex relationship develops between them. Both characters carry the burden of their pasts and inner demons:

John is a fugitive from his family and the “prayers of others,” searching for himself and his place in the world. Simon is a man with a dark past, prone to withdrawing and pushing others away to protect both himself and those around him. There's a lot of tension in the characters' relationship: miscommunication, attempts to push them away, doubts. John tells Simon directly that he wants to be there, despite his "darkness" and anger: "If you're an explosion, I want to be the one at the epicenter. And I don't care what the consequences are." He's ready to accept Simon completely. The climax comes when John picks up the camera again and photographs Simon—consciously, this time in a more relaxed atmosphere. He takes the picture without his mask, his face uncovered. John's hands shake, the focus shifts slightly, and the shot is blurry. But for the couple, this is unimportant: the photograph symbolizes their first step together, mutual trust and acceptance. The blurriness of the frame merely emphasizes that the important thing is not technical perfection, but the emotional connection and the moment they shared. The story ends happily: the heroes overcome their inner barriers and stay together, choosing each other.
